Bloodhounds Aid Hunt
for Girl Who Escaped

Broadcaster for Sternists Tricks
British in Jerusalem Hospital

JERUSALEM (Special)—The police and military con-
tinued their hunt with bloodhounds for Geulah Cohen, dark
and attractive broadcaster for the Sternists who escaped
through a window from a government hospital where she
had been convalescing from pneumonia contracted while
a prisoner.

Geulah had been under a seven
year sentence following her cap-
ture Feb. 18, 1946 when British
police seized her as she was con-
cluding a broadcast from the
Sternist mobile transmitter on a
rooftop In Tel Aviv.
SECOND ESCAPE
On April 7, 1946, Geulah escaped
by jumping from a second-story
window and then scaling an
eight-foot wall but was caught
less than a mile away.
She was stricken with pneu-
monia 10 days ago and removed
to the hospital within the heavily
fortified "Bevingrad," the secur-
ity zone of government buildings
in the heart of Jerusalem. She
recovered quickly and a few days
ago was allowed to dress and
move about in the detention ward.
STRATEGY USED
About 2 p. m. Sunday, two
Arabs began a violent fight in the
hallway. A few seconds earlier,
Geulah had asked permission to
go to the lavatory. As her guard
ran to separate the "Arabs", she
leaped through the lavatory win-
dow.
A search of the area was un-
dertaken by several hundred troops
and police who used bloodhounds
but no trace was found of the
girl.
Extremists opened fire at three
British constables Sunday in the
heart of the Jerusalem business
district and wounded one before
escaping.
TOMMIES UNRULY
The Jewish Community Council
of Jerusalem has addressed an-
other protest to the government
over the undisciplined behavior of
British troops.
A delegation of Arabs from Bel-
san has called on the Arab High-
er Committee to protest against
the current wave of terror by
Arabs. Since November eight
Arabs have been the victims of
political murders.

Community Role

"Jewish community life is
strained, Elliot added. ''It lives
off the European emergency, anti-
Semitism and lavish community
honors. When will be bubble
burst"? he asked.
In a keynote address, Dr. Theo-
dore Lewis, Rabbi of the Brook-
lyn Progressive Synagogue and
president of the New York Board
of Rabbis, declared that the prob-
lem that confronts us is the self-
integration of the Jew rather than
the integration of the Jew in
American life.
"The Jew in America is a pretty
frightened individual. He has a
begging attitude and that is why
he pushes the goodwill movement
so vigorously. All he wants is a
good word from the Gentile. But
the Jew must free himself from
self-hate• and self-pity. He must
be better informed about Judaism
and he must know Hebrew. He
should allow the achievements in
Palestine to influence him to ac-
complish these goals."
The theme of the institute was
the "Role of the Jewish Com-
munity in American Life. Julian
Krolik, president of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, and Harry
Seeve, administrative assistant
of the United Palestine Appeal,
spoke at the dinner session.
Participants in the discussions
which followed the main address
included Morris Garvett, Mrs.
Charles Lak off, Rabbi Max J.
Wohlgelernter, Harry Yudkoff,
Norman Drachler, Bernard Isaacs,
Benjamin Laikin and Herman
Jacobs.

The executions came directly
after the revelation that the Brit-
ish had murdered two refugee
Jews aboard the Theodore Herz)
when they resisted a British
boarding party.
At 2 a. in. Wednesday, Gruner
walked 15 paces to the gallows
in the prison yard at Acre. He
was blindfolded despite his pro-
test and as the rope was ad-
justed he sang "Hatikvah." A
moment later the trap door was
sprung.
At half hour intervals, the three
other patriots were murdered.
They were Dov Rosenbaum, 24,
an engineer; Eliezer Kashami, 23
a diamond polisher; and Mor-
decai Alkushi, 32, a chauffeur.
PLEA IS REJECTED
The men had been told the night
before they would be hanged be-
fore dawn. Rosenbaum asked to
see his parents but his plea was
denied. The others, determined to
ask no favors from the tyrant,
were silent. Police calls and the
radio informed the families that
their sons had been murdered by
imperial Britain.
In a heavily guarded convoy,
the families of the four men were
taken to the hillside burial ground
near Safer where, in a downpour,
the victims were buried beside
the grave of Shlomo Ben Josef,
first Irgun patriot to be murdered
by the British.
"It almost looks as if Britain
wants the country in turmoil to
set the stage for their plea at
the UN that Palestine is unman-
ageable under the mandate," a
Jewish Agency spokesman said.
There will be a revulsion of feel-
ing in favor of the extremists
just when Jewish national insti-
tutions were swaying sentiment
in other directions.

this is the way the British want
