Meat Talks Go On

We are glad that the kosher butchers
have rejoined the talks with the Jewish
Community Council concerning the charge
of alleged exorbitant prices for meats.
No one is better qualified to give the
butchers' side of the issue than the butch-
ers themselves. It would have been unfor-
tunate if the Council had been forced to
take unilateral action without having fully
heard what the butchers have to say.
And there is a butchers side, •of course.
When one considers that Kashruth alone
involves extra expenses, that some Jewish
housewives are overfinicky in their choice
of cuts and that the vendors have to take
losses on other cuts because buyers shun
them almost universally, we realize. that a
large differential between Jewish and non-
kosher meat is justified.
How large that differential ought in com-
mon rectitude to be is the question which
has inspired the Council investigation. For
the good of the community, it must be ad-
judicated speedily.
We welcome the decision of the Vaad
Harabonim, orthodox rabbinical body which
.e.:upervises Kashruth, to align itself official-
ly with the investigation. This publicizes
the fact that they have not been blind to
the dangers inherent in the rise in prices
and that they have quietly been conferring
with the butchers on the problem.
We are certain that a friendly and con-
ciliatory attitude by all parties will result
in benefits to the community as a whole.

Warning to Demagogues

Let the self-seeking demagogues in Mich-
igan and elsewhere who are promoting the
Current "Red scare" know this:
We are fully aware of the fact that they
are up to their old tricks and are coupling
the "Red menace" with their so-called "in-
ternational Jewish banker threat" as part
of their program of hate and self-aggrand-
izement.
In plainer language, we say that they
are trying to revive the bigots' old cry:
"Every Jew is a Communist."
That this is incompatible with their as-
,sertion that every Jew is simultaneously
an international banker doesn't seem to
disconcert them at all.
The truth to them is not important.
Theirs is a campaign based on lies, hate
and self-advancement and truth always is
their first victim.
We are not going to demean ourselves by
citing the facts to prove the absurdity of
their imputations. We count on the good
sense of the American people to repudiate
these enemies of democracy.
We bring up the whole matter to let
these rabble-rousers know that they are
not pulling the wool over anyone's eyes.
If there is a real Communist menace in
this country ; that is, if United States com-
munists are actually plotting the overthrow
of our system of life and government, we
are sure the FBI and other agencies have
the situation in hand and do not require
the gratuitous assistance of the self-seekers.
We accuse the promoters of the "Red
scare" of playing directly into the hands
of any enemies they pretend to be exposing.
Nothing will destroy the American sys-
tem faster than fear and confusion. The
spreaders of hate and the witch-hunters
are fostering that fear and confusion by
mouthing their ill-timed and unsubstanti-
ated charges indiscriminately.
If they had been honest, they would have
revealed what they claim to be true to the
proper police authorities who know how to
deal yvith subversives.
• By shouting their rumors and imag.
• inings from the housetops, they are
•• encouraging mistrust and bewilderment
• among the American people they claim
to defend.
, Is that what they•are aiming for in order
that they may further their self-centered

designs?

ZIONISTS GRATEFUL
Dear Editor:
As chairman of the recent ZOD
membership drive, I wish to ex-
press the appreciation of the
members of the committee for the
"all out" support which your pub-
lication rendered to us in our ef-
forts.
It Js extremely gratifying that
you gave us extra support in this
campaign and I am sure that a
good part of our success was due
to those efforts.
I would like to congratulate you
on the fine editorial which was
recognized and reprinted in the
recent issue of the "New Pal-
estine."
PHILIP E. LACHMAN,
Chairman.
HASHOMER RETORTS
Dear Editor:
Mr. Merzon has not yet re-
tracted his statement, appearing
in the Jewish Chronicle of March
14, that all factions within the
Zionist movement support the Ast-
ral Zion Committee. His mention-
ing of one or two persons who
also happen to be known Revisi-
onist sympathizers in no way al-
ters the untruth of the original
statement.
My interest in this affair is
occasioned not so much by the

position of my group being mis-
represented, nor even by said
committee having collected money
from the people of Detroit under
false pretences; the main thing is
that our people understand the
tactics of these innumerable com-
mittees (American League for a
Free Palestine, National Commit-
tee for Hebrew Liberation, etc.)
which constitute nothing more
than a Revisionist-terrorist front
Next to robbing banks, this front
is probably the terrorists' chief
source of income.
In the words of the last World
Zionist Congress: "The Congress
repudiates the activity of these
disruptive groups and calls upon
Zionists to resist their efforts with
all appropriate means."
Let us make no mistake about
the present terror. Today it is
against the British, but yester-
day it was directed against the
leaders of the Histadrut and Ha-
gana . . . and tomorrow once
more against all those who fight
for Arab-Jewish cooperation and
for democratic discipline within
the Jewish community. One of the
cardinal aims of the Revisionist
front is to break the Histadrut.
