Asserts Fascist Must Be Exposed, Ridiculed By MILTON H. RICHMAN National 'Commander, Jewish War Veterans (Col. Richman is a veteran of both Wdrld Wars. During the World War II, he served on the G-5 staff of Gen. Patton's famed Third Army and spent over a year in Europe after the Ger- man surrender as part of the Army of Occupation. Close to war crimes trials, he was in a good position to evaluate the causes of the growth of anti- Semitism in Germany before the war and to know from personal knowledge the minds of the present day Germans.) A S ONE WHO HAS returned I- I. from occupied Germany less than a year after an extended period of participation, I cannot help but view anti-Semitic mani- festations in the United States from the perspective of my experi- ence in Germany with both hate indoctrinated Nazi officials and with the ordinary run-of-the-mill Germans who drifted into the ways of Nazism because it seem- ed to them the simplest and saf- est thing to do. I look at the Bilbos, the Gerald K. Smiths, the Columbians and the other haters in terms of the Goerings, the Streichers, and the IIimmlers of the Nazi hierarchy; I try to make comparisons, and by such comparison to evaluate the techniques that should best be applied to our American brand of would-be Hitters. I wonder whether Streicher could have been reasoned with; whether it would have been pos- sible to convince this brute by a Fortune Magazine survey that the Jews didn't control the wealth of Germany. • • • GOERING'S RESPONSE I WONDER WHETHER the fabulous, fat, bemedaled Goering, imbued with the will to power, would have been amenable to a reasoned and careful dissertation on the virtues of democracy over dictatorship. . I wonder whether Himmler, the swaggering, cruel Gestapo chief, the personification of the corner bully, wouldn't have had more re- spect for a punch in the jaw than a panel discussion on the rights of minorities. The answers are obvious, but we think of them all too seldom as we listen to the pontifical theo- ries of the over-public relations minded technicians who seek to solve the human problems of emo- tionand hate in terms of the ad- vertising huckster who has suc- cessfully sold soap or automobiles or dog mood. I by no means wish to imply lack of sympathy or disagreement with the principles of programs of inter-cultural education in the public schools; of inter-faith meet- ings between the peoples of diver- gent faiths; with the educational lectures and pamphleteering that is carried on in labor, business and youth groups. These are all worthy long range educational projects; on their success rests not only the hopes of the Jews and other minorities, but of the Am- erican democracy itself. • • * CAN'T CURE BIGOTS BUT IT IS ASKING too much of educational techniques to ex- pect that they can cure the di. seased minds of such full grown bigots as Gerald Smith, Joseph Kamp and Senator Bilbo, to name just a few. The place of educa- tion in the fight for the preserva- tion of democracy is with the great mass of Americans whose prejudices derive from ignorance and lack of understanding of their neighbors. We found this same thing true in Gel litany. The Nazi stalwarts were beyond our reach; we were wasting our time, and only kid- ding ourselves, when we thought we could re-educate them to an appreciation of democracy. Were it not for the limitations imposed upon us by our own de- gree of civilization and decency, we might well have eliminated them from the face of the earth. We did this very thing with Goer- ing and some of his close associ- ates; and although we are not go- ing to hang every Nazi indoctrin- ated follower we might write them off, insofar as their ever be- coming good citizens of a democ- racy. They are too far gone, par- ticularly those who lived the for- mative early years of their life in Nazi youth hostels. SHA, SHA TECHNIQUE OTHERS BESIDES MYSELF realize that the Smiths and the Bilbos are beyond reclamation; that education will not reconvert them to useful citizens. But too many of the leaders and techni- cians in the fight against anti- Semitism counsel a soft glove pol- Passover Greetings SARA R. "Otherwise you will give them publicity and attract the audiences that they need for sur- vival." Very likely there is a half truth in this point of view; the publicity will attract attention and possibly help develop interest in the meet- ing in question. But the pursuit of this policy, I contend, is to succumb to defeatism. If one meeting and one demagogue can sway a community to a policy of un-Americanism, then there is no hope for Americanism. Let's have a panel discussion; but let's have it before the broad- est possible audience on the front pages of our newspapers. Ridicule him; expose his financial machinations; direct the light of day on his perversions and private life; put, him in jail if he breaks the law; hit him 'hard with everything we've got. There is a bandwagon psychol- ogy — the favorite defense for the hush-hush point of view -- but remember the bandwagon fol- lows the strong man. 'If Hitler were crushed before he got strong, there wouldn't have been a Hitler for the bandwagon to follow. There are times, of course, when for reasons 1,9 strategy — such as lack of proper evidence -- it is advisable to wait out a de- veloping bigot. But my point is that once he has exposed himself by his words and actions that the proper technique — the democra- tic technique — is to hit him hard with everything you've got.
