the producers could think of no
one else but Sylvia Sidney for all
slum-girl roles.
She played in the movies for 17
years as a rag-and-tatter crea-
ture; her ability to cry easily
came in so handily that Miss
Sidney forged her movie career
on that alone. She became so used
to the role that when she came
to the movie lot to report for
work, she automatically put on
her worst dress, disarrayed her
hair and poured mud and water
on her face.
"In one picture," she recalls,
"my entire wardrobe consisted of
a prison uniform and I wore it
for 10 weeks straight—the same
dress, eight hours a day, every
day for 10 weeks."
As a result, Miss Sidney was
consistently nominated the worst-
dressed actress on the screen.
Finally, it got on her nerves to
such an extent that she ran from
Hollywood back to New York.

THEN CAME "Street Scene,"
the famous picture of the Pulitzer

Miss Sidney was contracted to
play the part of a poor girl from
the slums. Her success in the role

pleted the run of the play in a
cast which hindered her move-
ments and limited her talents.
Her chance to do films came
when she was asked to replace
Clara Bow, the 'It girl,' in "City

came to a parting of the ways
when they disagreed on the way
the role should be played, and
shortly after that Miss Sidney re-

wardrobe, and a lavish set of
suits and dresses the lure proved
too great.
Back she came to Hollywood to
do "Blood on the Sun," for the
Cagneys. From being once the
saddest, drabbest, most-kicked-
around girl on the stage, she be-
came, at 35, one of the most
glamorous women on the screen.
Currently in "The Searching
Wind," a move written by Lillian
Hellman, Miss Sidney feels as
thought she's beginning a new
life. "It's like starting all over
again," she says, "but this time,
I'm back to stay." Looks as
though her hard-luck days are
over.
