edgings of crocheting), with silver
breakers and Elijah's Cup, with
the symbolic dishes of the Burnt
Offering, the Bitter Herbs, the
Salt Water and the Charoses.
The Seder reading took a long
time, too long we children thought
because we were really hungry.
There was a race to be the first
to finish the Four Cups and still
remain awake.
The dinner
"Intermission"
brought hard boiled eggs and salt
water, not one or two eggs al-
ready prepared, but entire eggs,
lots of them, as many as our
stomachs could hold, to be
squashed into the salt water. (A
case of eggs, 30 dozen, lasted only
until the fourth day of the week.)
Then the songs, such as "Ono
Kid, One Kid, Which My Fath-
er Bought for Two Zuzzlin" and
the rest of the service. No-
body was coaxed to go to bed;
the wine, the excitement, the
food were enough.
Did you ever crack nuts and
let them soalc in strong grape
wine and then fiSh the nuts out
with your fingers? Did you ever
roll nuts down an orange board,
steering your nut to hit the target
nut so you could win all the nuts?
Perhaps this was a European
predecessor of the game of
marbles.

THE FAMILY CYCLE
WHO WAS AT THE PASS-
OVER table? Everybody .. .
Mother, Father, the boys and
girls, the sons- and daughters-in-
law and their children. In time,
two tables were set to accommo-
date 10 children, 10 in-laws and
the grandchildren.
Slowly the family broke up, to
Chicago, to New York . . . Soon
Dad left us, and then Mother and
now they have been gone a long
time.
Passover was the anticipation of
physical and spiritual house-
cleaning . . . plus new clothes,
dishes, food and ceremonies.
There was friendly rivalry for
nuts, for finding the Afikomen and
the reward for finding it.
More, we looked forward to be-
ing together. Religion, family and
ceremony, our entire lives were
tied together deeply with the
hoz& and the children.
At the end of Passover, the

dishes were packed away-with
relief that the labor was over but
happily anticipating the next
Passover season.
