Beanut and the Seder:
A Pesach Short Story

Yes, one can preserve through
the memory of time departed the
irrecapturable past stripped of all
its unimportances and hallowed
by the pasage of the years. She
had an inexhaustible zest for
living.

In a small city like Sydney,
N. S., surrounded by coal towns
and flecked with their coal dub;
lit up at night by fires of the
steel slag being poured over the
banks which suffused the air with
a soft dull-red color, the Jewish
community was slight, inconspic-
uous, and scattered.
At that time most Jews Jived
in Whitney Pier which then as
now was occupied almost exclu-
sively by working people.
Most of our neighbors were
goyim. A Gentile family lived in

WITH US PASSOVER was the
" favorite holiday. I do not
know If this was so because I
was born during Pesach or be-
cause it was the first holiday
which my parents spent together
in Canada. But there is no ques-
tion that it was, above all others,
our favorite.
Especially did the first Seder
tax our energy and ingenuity. My
father would rush in from the
store, keeping a wary eye for so
much as a crumb of bread that
might defile the Passover sanctity.
Had we put away the plates
and other dinnerware? Were the
Passover dishes in their proper
place? Was every trace of bread
removed? Had the matzoh, the
unleavened bread which through
the centuries has come to signify
this eight-day period, arrived yet?
My two sisters were also fierce-
ly industrious. They did any last
minute cleaning up that was
necessary, herded my brother and
me Into our room, laid out my
father's new suit (always for Pas-
sover a new suit), and prepared
his bath so he could rush into
it without delay once the store
was closed.
From the kitchen a delicious
smell of kneidel soup and stuffed
chicken floated up the stairway
and crept into the room where
I was diligently memorizing the
four questions I should have to
ask at the Seder . . . My brother
was an attentive audience en-
tranced while I asked myself the
questions, answered them with
appropriate gestures, and strode
about dramatically.

And my mother was every-
where.
She was in the kitchen ladling
the soup and peering in the oven

to s,.e how the roast cniciten was
coming along.
She was in the living-room,
rummaging under the chairs to
satisfy herself all evidence of
chomitz was gone.
She had already placed the
plates and cutlery and frosted
goblets on the dining-room table
where they sparkled luminously in
their annual appearance from the
attic limbo. The candlesticks stood
squarely in the center, while ad-
jacent was a plate heaped with
matzoh.
She was upstairs to ascertain
that the water in the bathtub
would be hot enough for my
father's fancy.
And, mid all this hornet's nest
of bustle, she found time to drop
in and give me an encouraging
word.
I was being haunted by dark
forebodings.
Supposing I were to forget the
four questions?
"How can you forget them?"
she explained. "Here, come, and
say them to me. Sit down and
say them to me."
• • •
I was already too old, of course,
by my own standards, to sit on
her knee as she had indicated.
Instead I planted myself directly
in from of her and recited them
faultlessly.
"Nu, you see," she chided. "You
have no reason to be afraid."
Still I fretted. If I did forget,
what would happen? What great

punishment would befall me?
My mother's brown eyes danced.
"No," she said. "God will not
punish a little boy as long as he
is a good little boy. Be careful,
study, and you will not forget."
And then she was away again.
When she had finished her labors
our house was transformed into
a glittering wonderland. Even the
smell of cleanliness was more
beautiful at Passover.
