In Miami, the radios in a whole city block are uniformly tuned to one station and everybody is hud- dled about his radio. What are they listening to? What is so important? They and five million others are listening to the "Eternal Light" broadcast, a unique religi- ous program prepared by the Jew- ish Theological Seminary of Am- erica and presented as a public service by the National Broadcast- ing Company. (In Detroit, it is heard at 8 a.m. Sundays over WWJ.) The premiere broadcast of the "Eternal Light" series was pre- sented on Sunday morning, Oct. 8, 1944. Listeners who were tun- ed into the first broadcast were surprised — and delighted — to listen to an exciting and success- ful experiment in the realm of re- ligious broadcasts. Instead of the expected sermon, ritual, and service, they heard well-known actors in a moving dramatization of the historic Touro Synagogue. They heard, against a background of outstand- ing music, the thrilling words of George Washington's famous let- ter to the Jewish congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, promising religious freedom to Jews of Am- erica: ". . to bigotry no sanc- tion, to persecution no assistance . . . there shall be none to make him afraid."
