NEWARK, N. J.—The story of
a Navy radio mechanic on Guam,
vho, on Christmas Day, took over
In assignment of his Christian
buddy and met his death in an
Iccident while In the performance
)f his friend's duty was revealed
-ecently by Rabbi Louis Levitzky
who presided at the burial serv-
ices held here at the boy's home,
in Hillsdale.
Rabbi Levitsky is chairman of
the executive committee of the
National Jewish Welfare Board's
Committee on Army-Navy religious
activities.
When Sheldon Monroe Young,

Insecurity Produces
Hate, Arnold Asserts

NEW YORK—Bigotry and in-
tolerance are a product of "sick
economies" former Asistant 'united
States Attorney General Thurman
Arnold told the- American Jewish
Committee recently.
Insecurity, said Arnold, helps to
make recruits for rabble-rousers
among people who do not analyze
the causes of distress and instead
look for scapegoats.
JEWS NOT HOMELESS
Arnold quoted with approval a
statement of Judge Joseph M.
Proskauer, ASC president, repu-
diating the idea of the Jews as
a homeless people and affirming
that the Jews must be at home
in every country in which they
live. Judge Arnold said:
That expresses my belief. I
think that it is a cornerstone of
American democracy to preserve
the freedom of every cultural
group. That was the principle
upon which this country was
founded.
"A melting pot, in the end,
means a general merging and a
final military autocracy.
"This fundamental idea is not
a Jewish problem; it is an Amer-
ican problem. We all give this
principle lip service. The terrific
thing is that everyone in Amer-
ica is not willing to fight for it.
GERMANS SUFFER
"In 1936 we thought that Hitler
was only a Jewish problem. The
Jews were immediate victims but
the Germans suffered more than
the Jews for the simple reason
that there were more of them."
Arnold declared that intolerance
is raising its head "at our door-
step in South America. The cause
I think is primarily insecurity.
The nation which indulges in
group or racial intolerance is an
economically sick nation. It is a
nation without confidence in its
own institutions.
"We represent capitalistic free
enterprise in a world which seems
to be going the other way. It is
my own- belief that only through
the system of free individual econ-
omic opportunity can we have a
world that is at peace.
PREY TO ORATORY
"We must achieve an expanding
economy before anyone will be-
lieve in the security of economic
institutions, in their effectiveness
in building homes, in raising the
standard of living.
'If we do not do this, the man
in the street will not analyze the
situation; he will not quote statit-
tics on the restrictive practices
of international cartels. He will
be a prey to the first soap box
orator who points out any minor-
ity group as a scapegoat.
"Dictators are most dangerous
when, through a centralized gov-
ernment organization they deal
with an economic ill which democ-
racy has neglected. That is the
source of their power. The emo-
tional cement which holds their
organization together then be-
comes based upon racial intoler-
ance."
