Order Brith Abraham

THE

ORDER BRITH ABRAHAM, third oldest Jewish Fraternal Or-
der In the United States, was founded in New York, June 12,
1859, by German and Hungarian Jews. It had a five-fold purpose of
aiding members in need, giving medical aid, burying deceased mem-
bers "In accordance with Jewish law and ritual," providing for fam-
ilies of deceased members and assisting members to become citizens.
The order later attracted also Russian, Polish and Romanian
Jews. It reached its peak membership of 73,000 in 1913, then declining
until it was dissolved in 1927, when its assessment system could no
longer meet benefit obligations.
Michigan had the following lodges of the Order Brith Abraham:
Michigan No. 111 in Detroit, organized in 1888; Detroit Lodge No. 139,
originally organized in 1892 in Bay City, Michigan, and transferred
to Detroit in 1907; and Traverse City No. 139 in Traverse City.

Independent Order Brith Abraham

The Independent Order Brith Abraham was established in New
York Feb. 13, 1887, and was an offshoot of the Order Brith Abraham.
It retained the five-fold purpose of the mother order and subse-
uently undertook additional tasks: To protest discrimination against
he Jews in other lands, to combat attempts to restrict immigration
of Jews to the United States, to support American Jewish philan-
thropy and to aid in the reconstruction of Palestine.
Originally made up of German and Hungarian Jews, the order
soon opened its doors to Jews of Russian and Polish origin as well
and its membership increased rapidly.
In 1896 the roster numbered over 22,000 members and in the same
year women were granted equal rights with men. In 1907 the mem-
bership list passed the 100,000 mark and 10 years later the order
reached its record enrollment of over 200,000 in 775 chapters, an all-
time high among Jewish fraternal orders. Thereafter the order suf-
fered a numerical decline, particularly when immigration was so
severely checked in the postwar period.
In 1924, a new non-insurance class of membership was estab-
lished, including only the social privileges of the order. The "fraternal
rate insurance system," placing benefits and payments on a sounder
financial system, was introduced in 1926, and made compulsory for
new members, two years later.
There was an early lodge of the Independent Order Brith Abra-
ham In Detroit, under the name "Detroit No. 386," and a second lodge,
"Independent Detroit Lodge," was organized in 1912. The latter lodge
severed Its connection with the Independent Order Brith Abraham
about 1926 and continued its existence as an independent organiza-
tion.

YOUR REPORTER had a chance
to get a statement from the fight-
ing liberal of the South, Gov.
Ellis Arnall. He says:
"If you kids at the age of 18
could go and die for your coun-
try then you should be able to
vote. Show your elders that you
have good judgment and that
you take an active interest in
your govermnent. That's the
way you can prove to them
that you are sincere in your
wish to vote at the ago of 18".
That's sure some solid thinking,

Jewish Team Meets Crowd's Jeers
by Playing Harder Against Foes

(Continued from Page 3)
Bernstein had told "Red" Krueck
what they did about it.
"Red," Sol said, "we got to-
gether and decided to play hard
and decently no matter what was
shouted at us; to play the harder
on that account."
Krueck, who isn't Jewish, was
feeling proud because these boys
had character, self-respect. The
slurs and jeers hadn't mattered;
the respect they owed themselves
mattered much more.
They hadn't let the slurs get
them down; they had taken them
as a challenge, toward better bas-
ketball games. The whole town
was admiring their success. They
had won the 27 games.
They had as much as said:
"Sure, we are Jews and we're go-
ing to show you. We'll show you
our characters."
