Dr. Arzt Will Deliver
Installation Address

Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will be
formally inducted as spiritual
head of the Northwest Hebrew
Congregation and Center at a din-
ner reception at 6:30 p. m. Sunday.
Dr. Max Arzt, professor of
practical rabbinics at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America
and one of the country's out-
standing conservative rabbis, will
deliver the installation address.
Cantor David Katzman of Bnai
Moshe will sing.
Rabbi Segal, who came to De-
troit in September, was ordained
in 1939. He occupied a Chicago
pulpit until 1943 when he enlisted
in the U. S. army. He served as
a chaplain in the European thea-
ter for over three years and was
discharged last June with the
rank of major.
At Sabbath eve services March
28, Rabbi Segal's lecture subject
will be "Solomon Shechter—Lover
of Judaism."
A meeting was held last week
in the home of Ira G. Kaufman
for the purpose of forming a. Boy
Scout troop. Others present were
William Plotkin, former Eagle
Scout and prospective leader,
Morris Lasser, Herman Avrin,
Herbert Harris, Louis Zahler and
Malcolm Rivkin.

Yeshivah Ordains 85 Rabbis
in Ceremony Deferred by War

NEW YORK, N. Y. — Eighty-
five rabbis, graduates of Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological Semi-
nary of Yeshiva University during
the war years, when all public
functions were suspended, were
formally ordained at a "Smicha"
(ordination) Convocation March
16. Dr. Samuel Belkin, president
of Yeshiva University, presided.
The exercises, the twelfth in
the history of the seminary, also
marked the 15th anniversary of
the founding of the seminary,
Since its organization, the charter
of the seminary has been amend-
ed by the state enabling it to add
the schools which today form
Yeshiva University, the only uni-
versity under Jewish auspices in
the Americas.

The first Jewish Community
Center ballroom dancing class will
be held Monday. Director Herman
Harrison will conduct 10 sessions
every Monday from 7:30 to 10:30
p. m. Those interested can register
at the Center.
Judge D. J. Healy will speak to
the Wednesday Evening Discus-
sion Group at 9 p.m. Wednesday
in the Ginsburg lounge. His topic
will be "Juvenile Court and Youth
Problems."
A new dramatic group has been
formed at the D. W. Simons School
as part of a new plan to increase
the house activity of the Jewish
Community Center in the Dexter
boulevard area.
Charter members of the group
are Josephine Hoffman, Sally
Fishman, Alice Bloomberg, Allan
Krass, Marvin Sneider, and Arnold
Shaichet.
Membership will be open to boys
and girls, age 15-19, in the Dexter
area. Meetings will be held at 8
p. m. each Tuesday in the school,
1000 Tuxedo avenue.

Women to Sift Li
Drive Aims in

The lighter side of the art of
soliciting for the Allied Jewish
Campaign will be presented at
the ''College of Campaign Knowl-
edge" by the women's division at
12:30 p. m. Wednesday, in the
Jewish Community Center.
Beginning with a luncheon, the
afternoon's events are planned to
instruct workers in the technique
of soliciting funds and to answer
their questions about the cam
paign.
First class in the • college will
have Abe Sudran, associate direc-
tor of the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration, as instructor. He will
lead an information quiz prepared
by Mrs. Alexander W. Sanders
and Mrs. Philip R. Marcuse.
A skit entitled "There's Many a
Slip," dealing with the troubles
and triumphs of a campaign so-
licitor, will be the second class
period. Written by Mrs. Leonard
T. Lewis with the assistance of
Julian Zemon, and directed by
Mrs. Richard Freund, the playlet
has a cast of 12; Mrs. Harold Al-
len, Arnold Brodie, Mrs. Sally L.
Brown, Mrs. Martin Butzel, Milton
Doner, Mrs. Stanley Fleishaker,
Mrs. . Jerome Frank, Mrs. Arthur
Rice, Miss Marjorie Rosenthal,
Mrs. Nate Schlaffer, Mrs. Myron
Stein, and Mrs. James Wineman.

Address by Chajes

Julius Chajes, musical director
of the Jewish Community Center,
will address the Wayne Univer-
sity Chapter of the Intercollegiate
Zionist Federation of America
(IZFA) at 9 p. m. Thursday at
Hillel.
His subject will be "Palestinian
Music, Past and Present." He
will be assisted by Frances Bloom.

Rabbi Morris Adler will preside

the Passover ritual explained.
The lecture by Dr. James G.
Heller scheduled for Wednesday
has been canceled. On Saturday,
March 22, Rabbi Adler will preach
on "American Jewry—A Benefici-

correspondent and columnist of
the Chicago Daily News and the
New York Post, will address
an all-city Zionist meeting Mon-
day evening at the Shaarey Zedek.
