regime In Palestine, Prof. Johan
J. Smertenko, American League
for a Free Palestine leader, told
an audience of 250 March 12 at
the Durfee Intermediate School.
Charging that the Zionists hold
secret meetings to foster "illegal"
immigration into Palestine, Smer-
tenko declared that the League
openly asks for money and brings
the plight of the desperate DP
forcibly before non-Jewish Amer-
icans.
In answer to a question, he de-
clared that the ship David Rozeal,
sponsored by the League, bad
twice landed in Palestine and
successfully discharged refugees
after evading the blockade.
He pointed to the recent seizure
of the Ben Hecht and said that
the League would carry its fight
for the release of the Americans
on the ship to the highest court
in Britain, thus publicizing dra-
matically the Jewish fight on the
British White Paper.
A collection was made by the
League following the address.

History Made Here
in Synagogue Pact

In a history-making move, the
United Hebrew Schools last week
signed a contract to take over the
school facilities of the Northwest
Hebrew Congregation for a period
of 10 years as soon as construc-
tion of the synagogue school
building and offices is completed.
This is the first time in Detroit
history that the schools have
acted in conjunction with a new
neighborhood center to establish
an autonomous . branch of the
schools and obviating the need
for a separate school building.
