a particular race, religion or ethnic group
might be discriminated against in the
scramble" if an FEPC measure is passed
that this is a ludicrous argument. The mi-
norities which would be protected by FEPC
would get no extra powers but merely con-
firmation of their rights as human beings
and as Americans, rights to a job and to
security which cannot be refused or periled
because of one's color of creed.
Gov. Sigler must not let himself be
swayed by the red-herring argument on De-
troit's Senator Matthew F. Callahan that
Communists are for this bill and that it
would give them an opportunity to foster
class and race tensions. Decent Americans,
200,000 of them who signed the initiative
petitions, Americans who also abhor Com-
munism as contrary to the American sys-
tem, favor the bill because it will tend to
introduce justice in a field of human rela-
tions long ignored by the American concept
of fair play.
It will thwart those who live on racial
conflict and whose bigoted and venomous
souls cannot tolerate others who are some-
what different from them.
Yes, let Gov. Sigler show that he is a
real American and not a rabble-rouser, a
statesman and not a tawdry third-rate poli-
tician. Let him foster the tolerance, jus-
tice and good sense encompassed in the
FEPC bill.

Meat Is Too High!

Young people who want to practice Juda-
ism as a way of life are finding it increas-
ingly difficult these days to remain loyal
to their ideals. Singularly enough, those
who should be promoting that way of life
and making it smoother for the young folks
are apathetic or downright disruptive.
Ignoring for the time being the raising of
membership and other synagogal fees, the
high cost of Jewish education for some and
the excessive demands by this charity or
that, drives, campaigns, donor luncheons
and what not—all of which are a terrific
burden on young folks who have not yet
made their piles—we mention only the out-
landish prices demanded in the kosher
butcher shops.
This is nothing new, we agree, but the
situation is becoming worse and threatens
the foundations of Jewish practice in the
home.
Speaking frankly to the kosher butchers—
and to the rabbis who are supposed to be
supervising them: How long do you think
a young couple is going to go on paying
70 cents for a pound of steak when it is

subsidies during 1947. The society sug
gested to federations that the subventions
formerly given to it should be allocated to
the United Jewish Appeal.
The society is planning to extend its
activities in order to augment its business.
We applaud this unselfish action by the
society. It realizes that if it needs increased
funds, it should gain them by, improving
what it has to sell.
We bring this to the attention of the
Detroit Jewish News.
The many thousands of dollars fed into
the News as a subsidy by the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation could much better be used
to feed the starving and rehabilitate the
DP's.
If the 'News needs increased revenues,
let it earn them on its own merits just as
the Jewish Chronicle is doing.
It should not be overlooked that the
Chronicle gives thousands of inches of
columnar space to the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration and its activities and to the Allied
Jewish Campaign and the United Jewish
Appeal without a single penny payment.
Is it too much to ask the Jewish News
to do the same?

The Irgun

The position of the moderates in Pales-
tine is an unenviable one. Disapproving of
the tactics of the Irgunists and Sternists,
they nevertheless have been forced by
events to support these, if only indirectly
by refusing to report them to the British,
that is, to become informers.
Sections of the anti-terrorist part of the
Yishuv are concerned by the way in which
the Irgunists have practically taken over,
instead of the Jewish Agency, the Govern-
ment of Jewish Palestine. The left wing
IIashomir Hatzair calls for the elimination
of the terrorist gangs.
Whatever decision the United Nations
may come, to on Palestine, the set-up will
remain a peculiar one, for experience has
shown, in the main that terrorism, or if
you like, guerrilla warfare, cannot be com-
pletely suppressed, so long as the popula-
tion behind it is even passively supporting
or tolerating it.
If the United Nations recommends a Jew-
ish-Arab State, and makes definite provi-
sion, for the emigration of D.P.'s to various
countries as well as to Palestine, it is hard-
ly likely the Irgun would accept it.

The Jewish Jester

MORE ANECDOTES have prob-
ably been written about Al-
bert Einstein than any other man
alive. His immense learning, sim-
ple humanity, and abhorrence of
sham have made him a univer-
sally respected figure. Here we
lass on to you some of the anec-
lotes and Incidents that describe
Einstein's lovable personality.
Bennett Cerf once saw Einstein
placidly strolling down N e w
York's busiest thoroughfare, car-
rying a huge package in his arms.
Cerf followed him for a block;
not a soul recognized the profes-
sor. When the publisher caught
up with him he, asked, "Profes-
sor aren't your surprised that no-
body stops to stare at you? If
Lana Turner walked up this same
block, a thousand people would
gape."
"Lana Turner," said Einstein,"
has a great deal more to show
than I have."

A WHILE BACK a 12-year old
girl got into the habit of drop-
ping into the professor's Prince-
ton home. Her parents were
pleased, but somewhat puzzled too.
One night the mother asked him,
"What do you talk about every
day?"
"Oh," smiled Einstein, "she
brings me cookies and I do her
arithmetic for her."

EINSTEIN IS a man of imper-
tuable good humor and dry wit.
He is not inflated by his own
reputation. Not so many days ago
bookstore clerk found him
3,
;lancing at an income tax guide,
Ind asked him if he wanted one.
"Good heavens, no," cried Ein-
itein, "It's terrible enough to
have to figure out one's income
:ax without having to read a
.vhole book about it."
--o—
HIS KINDLINESS and goodwill
was never more ably demonstra-
ted than at a faculty meeting
Alien he was asked to explain
he principles of nuclear fission
n a sentence. Einstein said that
t would take him at least an
hour.
A brash assistant volunteered
to do it for him and floundered
30 badly that the dean begged
him to desist. "Maybe 12 men can
understand Einstein," he said ira-
tely, "but no one can understand
you."
Einstein comforted the crest-
fallen volunteer. "In Germany,
once, a hundred Nazi professors
collaborated on a book to prove
that my theories were nonsense.
Imagine! If I really was wrong,
one would have been quite
enough."
