Sunday Is Z-Day Here: 116 Protest
Join Detroit Zionists!
Federation
Sunday is "Z-Day" in Detroit.
On Sunday, the Zionist Organization of Detroit will Iron Hand
climax its "Fight Bevin" membership drive with a house-

to-house canvass of the Jewish community.
Hundreds of Detroiters have already enrolled through
the mails in response to the citywide appeal for an all-out
effort to "Fight Bevin."
"We have contacted thousands of Detroit Jews by

Carrying all her personal belongings in a oag, a Jewish refugee
is herded by armed British soldiers onto the gangplank of the
motor ship "Ilamaapil Haalmoni." A total of 800 refugees, sick
from years of suffering and insult in Europe, saw Palestine, "their
Promised Land," for one hour before being carted off to Cyprus.

Butchers Shun

Price Parley

The Kosher Butchers Associa-
tion has refuled to meet with the
Jewish Community Council to dis-
cuss charges of exorbitant meat
prices, Louis Fraiberg, director of
internal relations, revealed Wed-
nesday.
"David Krause, business repre-
sentative of the butchers, has turn-
ed down the Council bid," Frai-
berg said, "on the argument that
further discussion can be of no
value."
Fraiberg has been making an
investigation of wholesale and re-
tail meat prices as a basis of dis-
cussion with the butchers.
Before taking further action, he
said, the Council will make a new
effort to meet with the butchers
and hear their explanations for
the allegedly excessive differential
in prices between kosher and
non-kosher meats.
The butchers earlier had ad-
, rnitted that prices varied in dif-
ferent shops as high as 30 cents
a pound for the same cut and
grade of meat.

Britain Boosts
Palestine Quota,
Dr, Wise Asserts

NEW YORK (Special)—The rate
of immigration for Jews into Pal-
estine, has been increased from
a monthly quota of 1,500 to 2,500
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, told his
hearers at a celebration in honor
of his seventy-third birthday
Monday.
He said that the information
was regarded as • secret but that
it would be officially divulged
soon. He declined to reveal the
source of his information.
(In Jerusalem, reports continued
without confirmation that the
British were about to raise the
monthly quota just as disclosed
by Rabbi Wise.)
In his address, Dr. Wise de-
clared that the quota was the
"only thing standing between Pal-
estine and peace with honor.
"We call on Britain to substi-
tute Balfourism for Bevinism," he
added.

mail," said Morris Jacobs, presl
dent of the Zionist district. "Their
response to our call for support
of Palestine Jewry and our bretn-
ren in Europe indicates that De-
troit is awake to the pressing
needs of Jewry and is prepared to
make its voice heard."
BREAKFAST RALLIES
All Zionists who have signed
up as workers on "Z-Day" will
attend mobilization breakfasts
Sunday as guests of the Zionist
district.
Members of the Northwest Chap-
ter will meet for breakfast at 10
a. m. at the Peacock Delicatessen,
18663 Livernois avenue, it was an-
nounced by Seymour Tilchin,
president of the Northwest Uni-
versity Chapter.
All others will attend the break-
fast at 10 a. m. Sunday at the
Rose Sittig Cohn Bldg., 13226
Lawton.
FOLLOW UP LETTER
Speakers will a address both
meetings. Following breakfast,
teams of two will be supplied with
a list of prospective members who
have already been told by letter
that a delegation will call upon
them.
Oscar J. Kritzer, of the national
office of the ZOA, who is direct-
ing the drive in Detroit, was op-
timistic over prospects.
"We expect to enlist additional
thousands of Detroit Jews within
the ranks of the Zionist Organi-
zation," he declared. "Hundreds
new members have already joik
without any personal solicitatfoi.
on our part. Additional hundreds
of people, both men and women,
have answered our call for "300
minutes of your time" on Sunday
to canvass the homes.
ANSWER TO BRITAIN
"Every new member means
sterner opposition on our part and
on the part of all freedom-loving
persons to the policies of the pres-
ent British government on Euro-
pean Jewry and Palestine. Every
new member brings fulfillment of
the Zionist program of Jewish
Statehood and security in Pal-
estine a step nearer."
In order to right the injustices
perpetrated upon our people in
Europe and in Palestine we must
be prepared for effective political
action in this country," Jacobs
said.
'We in Detroit must do our
share to convince our own goV-
ernment in Washington as well as
the members of the United Na-
tions that the strongest body of
Jewry in the world today—Amer-
ican Jewry—stands firmly behind
the Zionist program of Jewish
Statehood in Palestine.
"We can express this sym-
pathy and support in unmistak-
able terms by enrolling now with-
in the ranks of the Zionist Or-
ganization."

Agency Drafts
Moscow Plea

Marshall's Support
of Program Visioned

JERUSALEM (Special) — The
Jewish Agency executive has ap-
pointed a committee to draft Zi-
onist demands to be presented to
the Four Power Conference in
Moscow.
Leaders are hopeful that Sec-
retary of State Marshall will be
able to convince Foreign Secre-
tary Bevin to increase Jewish im-
migration as a means of easing
Palestine tension in anticipation
of a final settlement.
SIIERTOK IS ARBITER
The committee consist of Rabbi
Abba Hillel Silver, leader of the
American section; Dr. Nahum
Goldman, delegate from London;
and Moshe Shertok, chairman of
the Agency political department.
Since Dr. Silver and Dr. Gold-
man are in conflict over parti-
tion, Shertok is expected to recon-
cile the views of the pair. A com-
promise resolution may ask for
free immigration and settlement
but express willingness to explore
the partition question.
Delegates feel there is a fifty-
fifty chance of a formula emerg-
ing from the Moscow talks as an
interim policy. They feel confident
of Marshall's support and point
to his strengthened position in
view of the Truman decision on
Greece and Turkey.
DERIDES APPEAL
Rabbi Silver predated, mean-
while, that the British attempt
to appeal to the Jews for "co-
operation" over the heads of of-
ficial representatives would fail
to split the Yishuv.
"It's just another attempt to
undermine the Agency," he said.
"It won't work."

Assembly Backs
Chronicle Plea

Democratic opponents of
the small ruling clique of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion came the nearest ever to
electing their own repre-
sentatives at the annual elec-
tion meeting of the JWF
Tuesday at IIotel Statler.
In addition, by unanimous
vote, , the assembly directed

the Federation board of governors
to give the Jewish Chronicle a
full hearing on its protest over
the expenditure of Jewish com-
munal funds for subsidizing the
Jewish News.
REBUFFED OVER YEAR
The Chronicle had been peti-
tioning JWF officers for such a
hearing for a year and a half
without success.
Guest speaker at the meeting
was Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, youth-
ful and brilliant director of Eu-
ropean activities of the Joint
Distribution Committee, who re-
ported on the problem of the DP.
While a Federation slate of nine
members was elected Tuesday, the
democratic group came within 20
votes of naming their two can-
didates, Nathan Kaufman, former
assistant prosecuting attorney, and
Maxwell Lowe, attorney, Zionist
worker and Boy Scout commis-
sioner.
"Despite the fact that we were
not organized and had' less than
a dozen bona fide adherents pres-
ent," Kaufman declared, "116 De-
troit community workers them
voiced a silent protest against the
autocratic clique ruling the JWF
by voting for me in a secret
ballot.
MORAL VICTORY
"Tuesday's vote was a moral
victory for democratic principles
in the Jewish community."
Ballots cast totalled 281.
Elected to the board of gov-
ernors were Rabbi Morris Adler,
Sidney J. Allen, Mrs. Aaron De-
Roy, Harry Frank, Morris Gar-
vett, Mrs. Samuel R. Glogower,
Joseph M. Welt, Mrs. Henry
