Stand Up And Be Counted

Virtually . every American Jew is a Zion-
ist. There may be a certain ideological dif-
ference of opinion among adherents of the
movement, but they all vision the resettle-
ment of Jews in a Homeland of their own
in Eretz
Zionism, to many, has become a corollary
to Judaism. Indeed, some say that unless
you are a Zionist, you cannot be a Jew. To
others, Zionism in itself is so vital and
regenerative that religious forces play a
secondary role to the humanitarian and na-
tionalistic ideals.
Except to an insignificant handful of
chauvinists, Zionism in no way conflicts
with loyalty to the land of one's birth or
citizenship. Zionists put it simply: Pales-
tine is to be the home of the persecuted
Jew, the Jew who is not wanted anywhere
else, the Jew to whom Palestine is Home.
Americans help to build Palestine as a
homeland for these people on humanitarian,
religious and sentimental grounds, There
is no question of any surrender of prero-
gatives of American citizenship or the as-
sumption of any as Palestinians. American
citizenship is certainly enough.
Picture an American Jew (except for a
few score young idealists or aged folk who
wish "to die on holy soil") giving up his
American citizenship for that of tiny Pal-
estine and you can see how ridiculous the
trumped up duality of citizenship idea is
ow the face of. it.
So, despite the oppositioh of the benighted
and un-American little gang of wealthy
"100 percenters", the overwhelming major-
ity of American Jews remain Zionists—and
good Americans to boot.
Which brings us to this: Despite the
fact that of maybe three and a half mil-
lion Jewish adults at least three million
are Zionists at heart, only a pitifully
small fraction have affiliated themselves
with Zionist organizations.
This puts ammunition in the hands of
the Council for American Judaism, of "Ha-
man" Bevin and other enemies of the Jew-
ish Homeland.
They can say—and the Council has fre-
quently done so—that actually there are
few Zionists in the U. S., and they cite the
membership rosters to support their lies.
The Zionist Organization of America has
launched a campaign for members so that
more of you will participate actively in
furthering a cause you believe in devoutedly
in your hearts.
Don't keep YOUR sympathy for the
aspirations and struggles of the Yishuv
locked up in your heart. without doing some-
thing about it.
Don't weep your silent tears for the
anguished DP's who are fighting to get to
Fretz Israel, without doing something about

Captives of Britain

As much as we regret , that desperate
members of the Yishuv have been forced
by British bestiality to take extreme meas-
ures in fighting the tyrant, let us be hon-
est and pay our respects to these valiant
rebels who are sacrificing life and security
for the vision of a free Jewish Homeland.
We decry the bloodshed and the
barbed wire, but can we honestly hold
culpable our brothers who fight in the
only way the treachery of the enemy
has left open to them?
Heroes of the Palestine Underground
have given their lives for world Jewry.
Scores have been carted off to British
concentration camps in Africa.
Their wives and children are hungry and
destitute.
We cannot be callous to their misery just
because we may deplore the degree of the
acts of. resistance of their husbands and
fathers.
Detroit Revisionists are giving a banquet
to raise filtids for the families of the Jew-
ish captives.
If you think the insurgents are in the
right, help them by attending the dinner
at the Wilshire Wednesday.
If you think the insurgents have gone
too far, help their wives and children, never-
theless, by attending the dinner, for we are
all still brothers.

FROM DENMARK
Dear Editor:
I am submitting to you one of
the letters received by me from
overseas survivors expressing their
gratitude for the fine gifts sent
them by Bnai Brith. I hope that
you will print this in the Jewish
Chronicle so that Detroiters will
know that their acts of kindness
have not been in vain.
To date, Detroit Bnai Brith has
sent over 48,000 lbs. of food and
clothing.
This is the letter. I am sure
your readers will overlook the
grammar:
To Bnai Brith, U. S. A.
c/o Nettie S. Shulman:
If your ladies and gentlemen
allow me saying so, we are all
of us here in Denmark appre-
ciating and very thankful for
the great work you are doing
all over for us as we need your
splendid help. Indeed, you do
give all of us a great help as
well as give us many lovely
surprises and happiness in many
homes in our little Denmark.
Why, you ought to see the
glad faces when we open very
useful packages what you send
is with a good heart to us sill
and we all of us send you our
greatest thanks and kindest re-
gards.

Attend the JWF Meeting!

We urge you again to attend the annual
meeting of the Jewish Welfare Federation
at 8 p. m. Tuesday at Hotel Statler. Nine
members of the board will be elected at this
session.
Those of you who have complained, and
justifiably so, that the Federation is run
with an iron hand by a small group who
dominate the ostensibly democratic board
of governors, will have an opportunity to
nominate candidates of your own choosing
and elect representatives who will obey the
public will.
On page one, you will note that the
candithites of the JWF oligarchy, the
same people who run almost every year
and who are run by the autocratic little
clique, can hardly be called represent-
atives of all contributors to the Allied
Jewish Campaign, particularly the small
givers.
Don't let the JWF bosses vote in another
group of their choosing without giving them
some kind of a fight.
Stop complaining in private about the
.TWF and come out to balk the bosses in
the open.
Let's see you at the Statler Tuesday
night!

LEAGUE GRATEFUL
Dear Editor:
The Youth Education League
takes this opportunity to thank
its many friends who so greatly
assisted in making a success of
their Victory Luncheon March 4.
While every attention is being
paid to the needs of indigent chil-
dren locally, the organization • is
also sending the majority of its
earnings to the devastated areas
of the world, to Europe for the
support of orphans and to Miles-
tine for child rehabilitation.
In short, Youth Education League
has adopted for its slogan, "We
give the most where and when
it is needed the most."
I should like at this time to
thank your paper and its staff for
th^ many courtesies and great co-
operation you have shown us.

make light of an intolerable

the housing shortage, for example.

at my place tonight, you'll have
to make your own bed.
SCHMEREL: Oh, I don't mind
that.
