This division will hear Leo !A- nte, distinguished foreign corres- pondent at a meeting Thursday, March 13, at the Rose Sittig Co- hen Building. FOOD SERVICE CHIEFS Harry Becker and Max Schayo- witz, were elected chairmen of the Jewish Fraternal Orders Free Sons of Israel (This is the tenth and last of a series) out HE JEWISH FRATERNAL orders in the United States grew of the need of the Jewish population for friendship, cultural ex- pression and material benefits in an environment that reflected their social and economic backgrounds. While the Orders were established primarily for mutual aid, many of them had altruistic purposes of national and international scope. The first Jewish fraternal order in the United States is Bruit Brith, founded in 1843. Its history in Michigan was considered in previous articles. The second oldest is the Free Sons of Israel. It was founded in New York City Jan. 18, 1949, by nine Jews who sought to remove from the charter of the City of New York the restrictions against the consecration of grounds for burial purposes, so that they could own a Jewish cemetery. Their efforts were successful and the nucleus for an active fraternity was formed. It followed very closely the general pattern of organization of Bnai Brith. T Two of the oldest and most devoted members of the Turover Aid Society, Mr. and Mrs. William Hoffman, 8812 LaSalle boulevard, will be honored by the group Monday on the occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary. The celebration will be at 8:30 p.m. in Jericho Temple. Mr. Roffman i is one of the founders of the society, a former president and vice-president and now supervisor of its ceme- tery. The Hoffmans have honored their anniversary by contributing $1,000 to philanthropies. Death benefits were established in 1871. During World War I approximately $1,000,000 was raised by the order in Liberty Bonds, and during World War II the order gave its full measure of support to the war effort.
