Menzies Blasts Entry

Ex-Premier Charges Refugees Find
Warmer Welcome Than the British

CANBERRA, Australia (JTA) — Robert G. Menzies,
former prime minister and leader of the Liberal party, has
attacked the government's policy of admitting Jewish
refugees.
Menzies expressed concern at reports that the refugees
were experiencing less difficulty in entering Australia than
Britons.
He warned Australian Jews, who he said have an "hon-
orable record," that if the num-

ber of Jews admitted to the coun-
try is disportionate, anti-Semitism
may develop. However, he con-
demned anti-Semitism which he
said was not condoned by his
party.
Jewish circles pointed out that
the reports of discrimination in
favor of Jews were untrue. Vari-
ous Labor party groups and trade
unions condemned the attack in
Parliament, while the clothing

ployers, who, it said, maintained

talith to the occasional worshipper
who had none of his own. He was
meticulous with the Yahrzeit can-
dles for those kaddish sayers who
asked him to burn a candle for
them on the anniversaries of their
dead.
Everybody was saying what a
good shammos Mr. Cohen was un-
til the day of the crisis. On that
day there was no one in the shul
to lead the congregation in the
prayers of the morning and Mr.
Cohen„as shammos, was called up-
on for this function.
This was a catastrophe for Mr.
Cohen. He had to confess that he
could neither read nor write He-
brew, and so how was he to lead
in the prayers of the morning? He
had been the most underprivileged
of children in Poland and that
was about the ultimate of under-
privilege in a land where most
Jewish children scarcely had any
break at all,

THEY WERE SORRY

THE SHUL'S BOARD of direc-
t tors was awfully sorry, but in
the office of shammos they re-
quired a man who had some edu-
cation, Mr. Cohen was out of a
job and went his sorrowful way
with the unemployed who were
plenty in the city at that time.
But Mr. Cohen, lacking any
scholarly attainment, had other
virtues. Among other things he
had character which admonished
him, "Cohen, you are no scholar
and can't ever hope to be one,
but, anyway, you can make a de-
cent place for yourself in the
world. What if you can't read the
prayers of the morning? You can
make it up with God in other
ways, like being a good man."
The years passed.. Mr. Cohen
had found another job and by
diligent toil had managed to save
enough money to bring his fam-
ily over. Ile bad established a
little business of his own. It
had grown. He had bought a
house in one of the suburbs. Mr.
Cohen was a respected and sub-
stantial citizen.

BANK PRESIDENT was
profuse in his welcome to Mr.
Cohen. The million-dollar note
was all ready for Mr. Cohen to
sign. He signed with an X mark.
His friend looked on goggle-eyed.
Mr. Cohen's X mark was trusted
for a million dollars.. . "Think,"
he said to Cohen afterwards, "what
you might have turned out to be
if you had been an educated man!"

Mr. Cohen replied: "Yes, if I
had been an educated man, I
would still have my job as
shammos in the shul."
Having finished telling the
story, the dean of boys said:
"You get what I mean, don't
you Mrs. ABC?"

Mrs. ABC quickly got the idea
that there's' a lot more than schol-
arly attainment that's important
in the upbringing of children, and
how significant is Phi Beta Kappa,
really?
The other evening Mrs. ABC was
pressing Jimmy to do his lessons
more thoroughly. . . "Sh-sh," ad-
monished Mr. ABC, "if you push
him too hard he may turn out to
be a shammos."
