Eisenhower Makes Moving Plea
to U.S. Jewry for UJA Support
WASHINGTON (WNS) — Gen-
eral of the Army Dwight D. Eis-
enhower, principal speaker at the
formal launching ;here of the
United Jewish Appeal, declared
that the needs of the Jewish sur-
vivors in Europe are so great that
"only one who as seen, as I
have, the mental and physical
effects of savagery, repression and
bigotry upon the persecuted of
Europe can realize the full need
of the material help and encour-
agement you propose to give."
Telling the more than 450 Jew-
ish leaders who attended the two-
day national conference of the
UJA that "charity can do much
to fill the breach," the chief of
staff of the U. S. Army asserted
that the effort of American Jew-
ry on behalf of their stricken
brethren in Europe was a "dem-
onstration of men united in mer-
cy toward the stricken, an ex-
ample that invites the world to
renew with increased zeal the
struggle against injustice, per-
secution and slavery."

President Truman, in an un-

Mr. Truman pointed out to Be•
yin that the Oct. 4 statement,
which Bevin attacked, had merely
repeated the position of the United
States government, "already fully
