Jewish shops and factories closed down and in most Jewish communities traffic halted for the first guar ter of an hour. The Hamaapil Haalmonl was towed into Haifa harbor in the pre-dawn hours Monday and the passengers were transferred to the Ocean Rival across a pontoon bridge between the two vessels. Leading the procession were a number of stretcher cases, victims _of a clash during which a British boarding party used clubs, guns, water hoses and tear gas to sub- due the Jews. Following the stretcher bearers were a large number of men and women with bandaged heads. It is estimated that fully one-third of the Hama- apil Haalmoni passengers were children. LIFT TROOP BAN Tel Aviv, which has been out of bounds for British troops for sev- eral weeks, was entertaining hun- dreds of Tommics this week, fol- lowing easing of the non-fraterni- zation order. Troops may now vis- it the city between the hours of 2 p. m. and 5:30 a. m. Palestine Arab merchants have filed a memorandum with the Arab League in Cairo asking that the boycott of "Zionist goods" be called off or compensation paid to Arab merchants to defray "losses resulting from the ban". Relations between anti-extrem- ist groups in the Jewish commu- hay and the extremist organiza- tions, which have been rapidly deteriorating in recent months, reached a new low when clashes between extremists and anti-ex- tremists took place in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa. The most serious incident oc- curred in Tel Aviv where six youths were wounded when mem- bers of the Irgun attacked ad- herents of the Haganah who were removing Irgun posters. The cable said that after the recent evic- tion of Jews and Arabs in con- nection with the establishment of British security zones, 57 Arabs came over to the Irgun. Sheikh All Shanhkin, a former mayor of Jaffa and a long-time opponent of the ex-Mufti of Jeru- salem, was assassinated at the door of his home in Jaffa this week by an unknown Arab. Ills murder is believed to be part of a campaign by the Husseini forc- es, led by the Mufti, to terrorize their opponents. One thousand trees, dedicated to President Truman, comprise the first grove in the Children's Memorial Forest in Palestine, the afforestation program launched under the auspices of the American Christian Palestine Committee. The land tract upon which the forest will be planted has been set aside by the Jewish National Fund. The certificate for the Harry S. Truman Grove was presented Feb. 10 by Joyce Van Patten, 12, and Richard Tyler, 14, Broad- way child stars. Sought to Burn Synagogue, Gets Probation Term LONDON (WNS)—Ivor Worth, a former British Army officer convicted on a charge of attempt- ed arson in the recent attacks on London synagogues, was placed on probation for three years in- stead of receiving the expected punishment provided for in the penal law for such crimes. Worth's defense was that Eng- land was "at war with Jewry" and that he "felt it was time we hit back." The light sentence has provoked much resentment in Jewish circles here, particularly in view of the fact that the accused failed to claim extenuating circumstances beyond claiming that he thought Britain was waging war against the Jews. Seminary Head Yeshivah Speaker Six hundred patrons of Yeshi- vath Beth Yehudah are expected at the Yeshivah's annual dinner at 6:30 p. m. Sunday in the Fort Wayne Hotel. They will represent all congre- gations and communal groups in Detroit Jewry and will include members who helped round the school 30 years ago. Highlight of the dinner will be a speech by Rabbi Oscar Z. Fas- man, president of the Hebrew Theological College of Chicago. Rabbi Fasman will be introduced by Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter, Yeshivah president. Max W. Tern- chin, chairman, will be toastmas- ter. The program will also include the graduation of Robert Marx, first student to complete the in- termediate course of the day school; the presentation of a pageant entitled, "David and Go. liath;" and musical selections by the Glee Club of the elementary classes and by Cantor Hyman J.
