DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The
TIME: Sunday afternoon.
PLACE: Dexter at Davison.
S
to Analyze
Religion's Role
Perhaps a few would be more
observant but the majority would
not. People, through habit, become
set in their ways
and a sudden
change does not
usually alter
them.
Those who
would become
more observant
of the Sabbath
are the persons
who through
economic r e a -
sons have been
forced to work on Saturdays at a
sacrifice to their religious habits.
The others would lie about the
house, attend a ball game or go
shopping. I would estimate that
99 percent would do about the
same thing as those who have
Saturdays free and yet do not ob-
serve the Sabbath.
BEN GLAZER, 4079 Fullerton av-
enue, clerical worker.
No, It would not. An old horse
cannot be taught new tricks. We
are brought up in a definite pattern.
If we have fol-
lowed the cus-
tom of observ-
ing the Sabbath
and have felt
deeply enough
toward it, no
reason whatso-
ever will draw
us away from t,
P.
that practice.
', X
It is true that
X
,
our lives are
governed primarily by economic
factors and that in order to hold
down certain jobs and to compete
with other merchants we must
work on Saturdays.
This has been going on for such
a long time in America that the
Jew is being drawn farthbr and
farther away from religion. Giving
him Saturday off will not draw
him closer to it.
MRS. SOL RICHARDSON, 3205
Tyler avenue, housewife.
I do not think it would. If a
person's religious convictions are
not strong enough to make him a
strict follower of
10 Judaism with
all its precepts,
then giving him
a little more
leeway will not
draw him back.
It is true, of
course, that
some would re-
turn to the ob-
servance of the
Sabbath but
that group would be very small
and among the older persons.
It is true that economically at
least Jews have a good excuse for
working on Saturday, yet my
father has worked for a Gentile
firm all his life and he still is a
strict observer of the Sabbath.
