Guts and Brains

We venture to predict that there will
be no more floggings of Jews in Palestine.
A British decision to abandon the prac-
tice was not due to recognition that this
was a barbarous and primitive punish-
ment or because in Britain itself, caning
is prohibited, or because outraged public
opinion in Britain assailed it—none of
these. A halt was called because, sin-
gularly enough, a "native" group in a
"colony" decided to do a little caning on
its own. "An eye for an eye" was followed
not in a sense of retribution but as a
warning that British hides could hurt as
painfully as Jewish skins.
One must deplore the indiscriminate kil-
lings and the fact that gangs, Jewish,
British and Arab, are taking advantage
of the disorder to perpetrate robberies
and murders. But at the same time, one
cannot, and if he is a true lover of liberty,
should not be entirely unsympathetic to
the aims and actions of the Resistance—
and speaking for ourselves, we mean the
Irgun Zvai Leumi too, who consider them-
selves soldiers of a Jewish Palestine Gov-
ernment.
An esteemed Detroit colleague talks of
brains as against "guts" and cleverness as
against "good common sense." He has
been writing editorials on brains and com-
mon sense with regard to Palestine for
23 years as an editor. He thought all the
answers on Palestine lay in the realms
of logic, of tolerance, of patience, of
common sense and of fine reasoning. We
ask him where has that gotten the Jews
in Palestine and out?
If a German Irgun had existed in the
early days of Hitler there might never
have been a Third Reich. What has pre-
vented Britain from acting arbitrarily
and bottling up all of Palestine or dividing
it up into tiny principalites of either the
Peel or Morrison abortions? Not logic,
not brains, not common sense, but guts—
guts that Jews, who knew only how to
die during the centuries, finally learned
that they possessed because the Maquis
and the other patriots taught them so.
Guts not brains made America and Ireland
free. Lack of guts is what is holding up
India's freedom.
Give us, too, less brains and more guts.
Less logic and more cleverness. Less pa-
tience and more action. That is the only
way—in a twentieth century that under-
stands these things—that Israel can ever
expect to be free.

which the Zionist organization is unof-
ficially a party to. The people in the cast
are renowned stars who are receiving
minimum salaries for their heart-touching
performances. The pageant has been
hailed by every New York and Chicago
critic as a stirring spectacle and as mag-
nificent entertainment.
The show starts next Monday at the
Lafayette Theater and will be there for
only six days. No true Detroit Jew should
miss it.

Restrictions Delay Hospital

We have been assured that the story
that plans for the Detroit Jewish hospital
will be dropped is preposterous. The long
delay in building, we have been told, is
due only to building restrictions and high
prices.
An enormous edifice of the type con-
templated, even though it is a hospital,
cannot be approved as if it were a small
store. We are glad to inform inquirers
that as soon as things ease up—and that
will not be too long—erection of the hos-
pital will go into full stride and the vision
of so many years will be realized.

`A Flag is Born'

The action of some Detroit Zionists in
promoting a whispering campaign against
the music-drama "A Flag Is Born" is re-
prehensible. Despite some specious argu-
ments that they might voice, their only
motive can be to injure a group which is
not a part of their organization. This is
an example of the petty, childish politics
that have been weakening the Zionist
movement for decades. Its leaders here
ought to rise in all decency to condemn
the spread of the vicious stories.
The truth is that the proceeds will go
to moving Jews to Palestine—a job in

What's Palestine To You

The ignorance of Jewish youth about
the new Palestine, its problems, its aspira-
tions and its accomplishments is disheart-
ening. There are some, it is sorrowful to
note, who don't care to know, but there
are many others who have never had a
real opportunity to learn about Palestine's
past and its glorious future.
To remedy this, an invaluable series of
talks aimed at youth will be sponsored by
the Jewish Youth Pioneers beginning Jan.
30 in the Jewish Community Center. The
talks will be non-political, non-contro-
versial, but factual and dramatic.
If you are young and love your people;
if you want to know more about their
struggles and successes in their own land,
make yourself a promise to attend at least
some in this series of talks on "What's
Palestine to You"?

HITS SUBSIDIZED PRESS

Dear Editor:
It is with great pleasure indeed
that I read your fine editorial,
"32 Years Without A Subsidy?"
A democracy cannot exist with
a subsidized press. It can only
function with a press that is free
and uncontrolled. The Jewish race
should be more conscious of this
than any other race, because their
very existence depends on keeping
the press, and through it, public
opinion unbiased and unprejudiced.
For that reason, it is regrettable
that there are newspapers low
enough to accept a subsidy from
a manufacturer, a political party,
or a welfare organization. The
publisher of such a paper is no
free man the moment he accepts
any sort of grant in funds or
other privileges. He is a tool of
the subsidizing organization, and
can never express a free opinion.
Herbert Hoover once said, "A
free press is far more than a
public privilege. It is a right of
the people. But the publishers are
its first line of defense."
What has happened to that line

retribution they visited on British
officers.
However, they are so badly out-
numbered and have so many
tremendous odds against them
that it is sheer folly for them to
continue to throw away their
fruitful young lives until they are
fortified by an aroused world
opinion and in substantial form,
by big power coming to their

rescue.

FOR ALL-DAY SCHOOLS

Dear Editor:
. . . We are the largest and most
prosperous Jewish community in
the world. Numbering 5,500,000,
we represent almost one half of
world Jewry. Obviously, this Im.
poses upon us the inescapable du-
ty of assuming the responsibility
for Jewish survival. We are the
generation that must secure and
entrench the Jewish eternity .. .
Jewish survival hinges upon the
Torah. Without the Torah we are
doomed — with the Torah we are
invincible. Our sages long ago told
us that no enemy will be able to
prevail over us so long as we
uphold the Torah.
There is only one school which
provides the kind of Torah-educa-
tion which our sages regarded as
the best Jewish defense. This
school is the Jewish All-Day
School. There can be no substi-

Ten years prior to the appearance of
"Abie's Irish Rose" on Broadway, (in
1922), the Bnai Brith Anti-Defamation
League was organized with the very defi-
nite purpose of eliminating that character
of stereotype of all groups from stage and
screen. The shock and revulsion experi-
enced while witnessing certain sequences
of this film will, no doubt, evoke peals
of laughter from some motion picture
audiences. The producm, distributors,
