Jewish Homes Looted
by Marauding British

Jewels, Cash Stolen at Gunpoint
as Tommies Continue 'Searches'

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Continued looting of Jewish
homes by British soldiers was reported this week from
various parts of Palestine.
In a number of cases detachments of airborne troops
instituted "searches" without orders or warrants. The
"searches" consisted of systematic ransacking of Jewish

apartments. Women's purses, mon-
ey, jewelry, watches, fountain pens
and other valuables were taken
and the owners were threatened
with pistols or tommy guns.
• The Hebrew press carries de-
tailed accounts of incidents in
cities, towns, settlements and on
the roads.
A man found unconscious on the
Petach Tikvah road died later. He
was identified as David Bernitzki,
27. It is thought he may have
been attacked by a military patrol.
Eighteen Jews were arrested
during raids in Tel Aviv and Rish-
on le Zion. The Tel Aviv arrests
were made by troops carrying lists
of wanted men. The 13 seized
were found in different parts of
the city. One of those arrested
had a tommy-gun in his posses-
sion. During the raids four soldiers
invaded a house In the Kirlat
Meir quarter of the city and beat
all the occupants and stole a
quantity of valuables.

Niemoeller Called Northwest Area Zionists Await
`A Refined Nazi' First Chapter Meeting Thursday

CHICAGO — Pastor Martin Nie-
moeller, controversial German
churchman now on a speaking
tour in the United States, was
characterized this week as "a re-
fined Nazi" who believes implicity
in the Master Race theory.
His accuser was Rabbi Samuel
Teitelbaum, Hillel director at
Northwestern Univerrit:,', and who
was billeted for tv.•.) months in
1945 with the Germa' Lutheran
leader, the National Jewish Post
of Indianapolis reported.
Niemoeller described the Jews as
"different" because they are an
"Oriental Race," and admitted he
thought it was a mistake to have
granted them citizenship rights in
Germany, Teitelbaum declared.
The former U-boat commander
in World War I and early mem-
ber of the Nazi party went fur-
ther :n his frequent talks with
Chaplain Teitelbaum and revealed
he believed Jews should not have
been allowed to hold public office
or participate in German public
life. He characterized the Rus-
sian-Polish Jews who came Into
Germany after 1918 as the scum
of the earth."
Much publicity was given the
pastor for his opposition to Hitler,
- Ind when he was thrown into a
concentration camp in 1939 he was
hailed as a great anti-Nazi.
This is not true, according to
Teitelbaum. Niemoeller was not on-
)osed to Nazism per se, but dis-
agreed' with Hitler on two points
—the Fuehrer's opposition to the
primacy of the church and his
'Ise of violence against the Jews
and other minorities.

Against Martial Law

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Pal- a
estine government was warned
this week that any attempt to im-
pose martial law would only in-
crease tension and defeat its pur-
pose of suppressing the terrorists.
The warning was issued by Ha-
ganah, Jewish resistance move-
ment. In a broadcast over its
secret radio, Haganah said that
"an attempt to rule the country
with an iron hand would be con-
sidered as aiming at the honor
and economy of the Jews in Pal-
estine." Such action, the broad-
cast stated, will not isolate nor
liquidate the terrorists who are
able to escape and evade punish-
ment."

"I feel" said Jacobs, "that no

formed on the present trend in
Jewish life, particularly as to the
rights of the Jew to Palestine. It
will only be by his coming to a
meeting of this type that he can

This action was characterized
by the Conference as "a particu-
larly nasty display of anti-Semit-
ism which cannot but lead to re-
taliatory acts of violence."
The communication, signed by
Louis Lipsky, chairman of the ex-
ecutive committee of the Confer-
ence, pointed out that the entire
Jewish community in the United
States Is deeply concerned over
the present situation in the Holy
Land.
The letter emphasized that this
occurrence is not the only incident
of anti-Semitic excesses by Brit-
ish troops in Palestine, and that,
in fact, it is merely the most re-
cent "in a long series of incidents
which indicate that the Jewish
population in Palestine is being
subjected to a lawless regime of
oppression and brute force exe-
cuted by military and police
authorities."
