Friday, Januar 10, 1947 Page Fifteen DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle Forum Aide New York Bnai Brith Highlights JWV Broadcast —an d--- Hollywood By HENRY WEGODSKY LAST SUMMER Billy Rose began reminiscing about show business and show people In newspaper ads for his New York nightclub, "The Diamond Horseshoe." So well re- ceived was the chatter that many newspaper editors requested re- print rights. Rose subsequently started releasing a daily column entitled "Pitching Horseshoes" without charge to newspapers throughout the country for a six month period ending Jan. 1, 1947. Before that trial period expired, however, the column was contract- ed for by a national syndicate at a minimum retainer of $50,000 an- nually. "Pitching Horseshoes" cur- rently appears in 76 dailies. Ru- mor has It that Rose will donate a considerable share of the $50,000 to worthy Jewish charities. • • • CANADA'S FIRST Yiddish nightclub will open in Montreal sometime In February. Yiddish stage star, Jennie Goldstein, will headline the premiere. • • • MOSS HART'S new play "Chris- topher Blake" was purchased this week by M.G.M. at a reputed $300.000. • • * ETIIEL MERMAN, currently in Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun", is Broadway's high- est paid stage performer. She receives a minimum guarantee of $4,600 weekly. Her understudy, who has as yet- not been called upon to substitute for Miss Mer- man, receives $500. • « • ARTHUR KOESTLER will ar- rive In Hollywood in mid-February to begin the screen play for his current best seller, "Thieves In the Night." • • • A SURVEY CONDUCTED earli- er this year by the National Con- ference of Christians and Jews re- vealed that well over half of the sample interviewed was undecided as to whether they would actively participate in race riots and pog- roms. Stirred by these findings, the National Conference assumed the task of promoting brotherhood on a comprehensive scale. In February, the Conference will begin a powerful campaign aimed at curbing prejudice and bigotry, in general, and anti-Semitism, in par- ticular. The full cooperation of the clergy, radio, motion pictures, newspapers, magazines, and the Advertising Council has been en- listed. It Is my good fortune to have access to the details of the com- paign. I can recall no brother- hood campaign more thoughtfully conceived and so masterfully plan- ned. • • • IN HIS DEC. 13 COLUMN, Mr. Wegodsky indicated that the Anti-Defamation League was con- sidering the purchase of the negative of the film "Able's Irish Rose" for $550,000 to prevent its distribution. Richard E. Gut- stadt, national director of the league, informs us that the league has never had an inten- tion to purchase the film and that the statement in the column was unauthorized. The Jewish Chronicle Is glad to make this correction. • 1 WOMEN'S COUNCIL Miss Helen Hamlon, supervisor on the Detroit board of education, will speak at the second session in the Anti-Defamation League Workshop series at 8:30 p. m.
