DETROIT flWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle Revisionists Elect `Flag Is Born' Coming to Detroit Poet to Address Merzon President With Ben-Ami and Celia Adler Kvutzah Function Prof. Hillel Bavli to Speak here Tuesday Anniversary Affair Hears Palestinian M. Manuel Merzon was elected president and Dr. Noah E. Aron- stem, honorary president of the New Zionist Organization at the anniversary meeting recently. The following were also chosen: Jacob Mohr, vice president; Joseph Grossman, secretary; Sol B. Edel- man, treasurer; and Bela B. May- or, Louis Panush, Baruch Rosen- berg and Aaron Teitelbaum, mem- bers of the executive committee. The affair was featured by an address in Hebrew by Mrs. Eliezer, Shostak, wife of a prominent Re- visionist from Palestine who was a delegate to the Zionist Con- gress. She declared that the mir- acle wrought at the time of the Maccabees is a direction to Jews of today not to remain silent, but to raise the same banner of rebel- lion against the British oppressors. Merzon revealed that thus far $865 had been raised through syna- gogues for the Asirai Zion Fund. which helps the families of im- prisoned Jewish fighters in Pal- estine. He acknowledged the help given in that connection by David J. Cohen, former president of Bnai David Synagogue. He read the following excerpts from a letter by an American lad in Palestine: "The feeling of home is in- escapable. A feeling of permanen- cy, despite the political storm that seem to be raging about us. Be it in the Hebrew signs in front of all the stores in the city, the con- stant bable of children in the native Hebrew, or the fact that you turn the knob of your radio and find a lively Hebrew melody sung instead of hearing a soap ad thrown at you. One instinctively knows that this place is Jewish like no other place in the world." Eye-Witness Prof. Hillel Bavli of the Theo- logical Seminary of New York will be guest lecturer at a gather- ing of Kvutzah Ivrith and the Heb- rew Teachers Organization at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium of the David W. Simons School. Bavli, student of Hebrew litera- ture, will speak on the poet, David Shimonowitz, whose 60th anniver- sary is now being celebrated. On Wednesday at 8:30 p. m., Bavli will lecture in English at Congre- gation Shaarey Zedek. One of the contemporary poets who has introduced the American theme into modern Hebrew poetry, Bavli has won acclaim for his He- brew translation of Charles Dick- en's Oliver Twist. Plans have been completed by the Ladies Auxiliary of Kvutzah Ivrith for its annual donor lunch- eon Feb. 4 at Congregation Sea- rcy Zedek. The drama will appear at the Lafayette Theater and will star Jacob Ben-Ami and feature Celia Adler. Proceeds are used to facilitate immigration to Palestine. "It would be most gratifying," a British correspondent remarked recentry, "if Ben Hecht could be made to shut up." Evidently the bullet found Its target. More than one foreign office would consider it a happy day if the pungent pen of this master dramatist, publicist and champion of the underdog, would suddenly go dry. Every great issue in history has produced literary figures equal to the cause. Emerging from the American Revolution were Tom Payne and Jefferson, France had its Zola and the Irish their 0'- Casey. Ben Hecht is in this tradi- tion, matching the sharpness of wit against the barbed wire, bru- tality, and indifference of diplo- mats and officialdom. The theater as a fighting force received major transfusions from Hecht. All-told, he has written 10 pageants and his present play, "A Flag Is Born," with the recurring theme of the common man's fight for freedom. He wrote "It's Fun To Be Free," "Underground America," "Miracle In A Pullman". The United Na- tions Conference in San Francisco opened with a Hecht pageant. "A Flag Is Born" sees Hecht re- turning to straight dramatic ef- fort as a music-drama. What will happen on the stage of the Lafa- yette Theater is both explanation and prophesy . .. drawn from the world of reality.
