MAKE THREAT GOOD
The burning of the second syna-
gogue was obviously a result of
the floggings In Palestine when
the Ifgun Zval Leumi made good
its threat to strike retaliatory
blows if the authorities carried out
the verdict of a military court
ordered the whipping of a 16-year-
old Jewish youth whom it had
sentenced for extremist acts.
British army authorities in Pal-
estine confirmed that the sentence
of 12 lashes woilld be carried out
despite the Irgun warning that
any lashings would result in re-
prisals with "bullets." The sentence
was approved by the notorious
anti-Semitic British commander,
Lieut. Gen. Sir Evelyn Barker
who is concluding his service in
Palestine.

2 TORAIIS MUTILATED
Two weeks ago the Clapton
Synagogue In East London was
broken into and intruders entered
the Ark, took two of the Scrolls
of the Torah and attempted to
burn them, but they were merely
singed. A message signed, "Na-
tional Guard", was left by the
gang.
The initials 'N. G.' were scratched
near the Dollis Hill Synagogue.
This led police to believe that the
vandalism had been committed by
the same group.
The hoard of Deputies of Brit-
ish Jews said that those who had
watched with concern the "re-
emergence in the streets of East
London of known pre-war Fascist
agitators will be shocked but not
surprised at the hoodliganism."

RABBI M. J. WOHLGELERNTER
for Zion in Offing
WASHINGTON—Peter Bergson,
chairman of the Hebrew Commit-
tee of National Liberation, sailed
for Paris this week to head an
office of the committee which is
drawing up plans for a Jewish
Provisional Government-In-Exile.
Bergson, who has received sev-
eral extensions of his permit to
remain in the United States, said
that he hai a re-entry permit from
the State Department.
Before he sailed, Bergson an-
nounced that during his absence
Dr. David Wdowinski, hero of the
battle of the Warsaw Ghetto and
president of the Union of Hebrew
Partisans, of Europe, would be
chairman pro-tempore of the Heb-
rew Committee.
Messages pledging American sup-
port for the Hebrew government
in exile were delivered to Bergson
including telegrams from Senator
Warren G. Magnuson of Wash-
ington, former Senator Guy M. Gil-
lette, president, American League
for a Free Palestine, Ben Hecht,
Louis Bromfield and Will Rogers,
Jr.
Senator Magnuson said: "I have
for years followed the attempts
of lesser leaders and deliberate de-
famers here and abroad to dis-
credit your efforts and the com-
mittee's work, but through the at-
tacks you and your colleagues
have steadfastly thwarted all ef-
forts to sabotage the definite so-
lution of the problems-of P.aJestine
and the saving of Hebrew lives.
"Thousands today owe their lives
to you, and a reborn nation will
soon be in your debt. You are now
on the threshhold of realizing that
solution, and I for one have com-
plete faith that your provisional
government will be most signal.
cant in settling the problem of
Palestine. Your historic cause will
not be without its champions in
the senate of the United States."
NEW YORK (Special)—"A clear
purpose and a clear line has
emerged from the Zionist Con-
gress," Dr. Abba Hillel Silver,
president of the ZOA, declared
on his arrival In New York by
air from the Congress in Basle.
"The old leadership was repudi-
ated at the Congress, "he ex-
plained, "Its record was one of
retreat and political failure. The
Congress reaffirmed the classic
Zionist positions expressed in the
firm resolve of the Jewish people
to resist all illegal actions of the
British government either to liqui-
date or constrict the Jewish Na-
tional Home.
"The Congress refused to lend
itself to British dilatory maneu-
vers. The proposed London con-
ference is such a measure, but
should circumstances change and
the British give clear indication
that they really intend to abandon
their disastrous White Paper pol-
icy by lifting the restrictions on
immigration and colonization, the
Jewish Agency will most gladly
attend the conference. The next
move is clearly up to the British.
"The policies adopted by the
Congress were In complete con-
formity with the position taken by
the ZOA at its last convention."

Meantime, David Ben Gurion,
newly elected chairman of the
Zionist executive, began consulta-

colonial secretary, on possible Jew-

by a close vote formally refused
to take part in the talks but left
an opening if Britain would grant

both U. S. and world Jewish
opinion is that the Jewish Home-
land must not be pared further.
