American ,fewisk Pedalled Center CLIFTON AVENUE - CINCINNATI 20, 01110 1111.1111111111111111111111===eltL Friday, December 27, 1946 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle Page Thirteen Dayton Netvspaper Pays Tribute to Americanism of 3 Young Refugees THE DAYTON, 0., HERALD, recently told a success story of three Young Daytonians quite different from the usual "home town boy makes good" patiern. The two boys and a girl in this instance had been brought to the United States as refugees and, as the Herald related, had proven themselves by the eagerness "to become American citizens and es- tablish homes," and fight for this country during the war. The young "adopted Dayton- fans" are Trude Katz, Margot Kaufman, and Lothar Abraham, who were rescued from Germany 10 years ago by European Jewish Children's Aid, an affiliate of United Service for New Ameri- cans. The careers of Trude, Mar- got, and Lothar, the Herald said, typify the refugees' appreciation of the opportunity to live in free- dom and security in America. * * TRUDE IS MARRIED TRUDE AND MARGOT were graduated from high school in Dayton early in 1944. Soon there- after Trude married an engineer stationed at Wright Field and has since made her home with her husband in Baltimore. Margot became a cadet nurse in a Cincinnati hospital. Following the Rhineland occupation, she found that her sister Ellen, the only other surviving member of her family, was alive In a con- centration camp. Ellen has since married an American Army offi- cer stationed in Austria. Lothar enlisted in the United States Army after his graduation from high school and fought in Europe with the late Gen. Patton's Third Army. He was wounded near Metz and hospitalized for six months. He and Margot plan to be married as soon as she fin- ishes her nurse training. * * * GIFT FROM MOTHER AMONG THE WEDDING GIFTS for the couple will be a set of silverware and other family heir- looms which formerly belonged to Margot's mother. Before she was taken to a concentration camp, Margot's mother gave these to a Christian neighbor with the un- derstanding that her daughters, if they survived, were to receive half of them. Trude, Margot and Lothar were offered and accepted the opportu- nity to live, and grow, and learn in safety and with freedom not available in the lands of their birth," the article concludes. PHIOROTHSCHILD, :04 41) Belle Baker Is Star of Show at Bowery "These common threads are the centuries-old responses which America has evoked from her for- eign born. As we grow older as a nation, and close tighter the gates of immigration, we need frequently to be reminded of the opportunities that are ours—to use and to give." Belle Baker, with Sid Connie at the piano, is the star of the huge holiday week show at Frank Bar- baro's Bowery. The two-a-day vaudeville circuit crowned Belle as -------- its queen of headliners. This radiant, warm-voiced singer of pro- foundly stirring tunes and In- terpreter of up- roarious comedy material has few equals in the amusement world. Her showmanship evinces the same strength today that it displayed when the variety stage was at its peak. Outstanding in Belle's support are master of ceremonies Frankle Rapp, a sure cure for the blues; the Marie Kuhlman Dancers; Val- Zarcos, colorful ballroom dancers; sepia tapster Leon Collins; Lil- lian James, swing songstress; Ed- dy Jerome, popular tenor; the Jumpin' Jivers and others. Ben Young and his orchestra do the music for the show and dancing. The two Maxes, Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom and Maxie Baer, will be the Bowery headliners, for seven days, starting Monday, Dec. 30.
