adviser at an installation dinner Dec. 28.
Rabbi Neuhaus came to Detroit several months ago after sur-
v iv ing three years as an inmate of the infamous Nazi detention
( : 1, Thereisenstadt. He attributes his survival and that of his
. who was with him, to the fact that the Germans had to keep
leader alive to be rabbi and
",„cial supervisor for the thous-
ands who were sent to the camp
to work in nearby ammunition
and technical works or to await
transfer to the torture and death
camps.
Thereisenstadt was used by the
Nazis as their "model" camp, Rab-
bi Neuhaus explains, so that Red
Cross officials from Switzerland
and Sweden could be shown how
well the Germans treated their
Jewish captives. 'Rabbi Neuhaus
has a piece of paper money, Issued

MANY OF THE Thereisenstadt inmates were young artisans and
scientists from Czechoslovakia. They manufactured munitions and
worked on camouflage garments, Rabbi Neuhaus explains, and were
kept alive. But thousands of older men and women starved tc death
and he officiated during October, November and December 1942 at
the burial of an average of 150 each day.

Ten thousand Jews from Franfurt 'entered Thereisenstadt en
route to the death camps, Rabbi Neuhaus points out. Only 400
returned.
Upon his liberation by the Americans, Rabbi Neuhaus was named
an adviser to the military government.

Major H. P. Radigan, welfare officer, wrote of Rabbi Neuhaus:
"He Is one of the few who returned to Frankfurt after concentration
camp internment and has always offered wise and sympathetic counsel
to those who come to him for help and guidance . .. He is held in
high esteem by all with whom he has come in contact for his efforts
to aid the distressed people of all creeds who find themselves in dif-
ficult circumstances as the aftermath of the war."

"THE YOUNG GERMANS," he asserts, "have learned no lesson.
They are still Nazis at heart and it will take an occupation of two
or three generations by the Americans to eradicate the poison of
Nazism,
"As for the Jews in Germany, some want to go to America to
live, but the greatest number look to Palestine an their future home.
There is no such thing any more as the German Jew who was even
more arrogantly German than the German gentile."
Dr. Neuhaus has one son, Rabbi Ralph Neuhaus of Congregation
Ohav Sholom, New York. His first grandchild, a girl, was born just
two weeks ago.
He makes his home at 2241 Hazelwood avenue. His synagogue
is in the Jericho Temple building and services are held regularly.
There is an Oneg Shabat at 8:30 p.m. Fridays. Dr. Neuhaus preaches
in German. Services are orthodox.
