Soldier Linked to Armed Robberies
in Both Jewish and Moslem Regions

JERUSALEM (Special)—The British army revealed
that six British soldiers had been arrested while attempt-
ing to sell arms to Arabs in Masmiya last week.
It was reported that the soldiers had been implicated
in a recent series of armed robberies in both Jewish and
Arab centers.

Meanwhile, Brigadier J. V. Mc-
Cormick of the British army de-
clared that he was resigning as
Midwest army public relations of-
ficer because "the War Office has
told me bluntly I am unsuitable
for the job because I am too
friendly with the press."
PLANS TO QUIT ARMY
McCormick said that he was
asking for demobilization from the
forces.
The country-wide Arab strike
passed with only minor disturb-
ances reported from rural areas.
The strike was called by the
Palestine Arab Higher Committee
as a "protest against' continued
Jewish immigration and against
provocations of Arabs in their own
towns and villages by Jewish
gangsters."
Irgun Zvai Leumi was reported
to have warned British authorities
that attacks against British per-
sonnel would resume if the sent-
ence imposed last week on a con-
victed Jewish youth is confirmed.

GETS 18 YEAR TERM
The 16-year-old youth, Abrahim
Kimkhin, was sentenced to 18
years imprisonment and 18 strokes
with a lash for robbing a bank at
Haifa last September and for pos-
sessing illegal arms.
Although there has been compar-
ative quiet in the country, reports
from Rehovoth say that uniformed
British air troops raided a res-
taurant there and escaped with
much cash.
In Jerusalem the police are con-
tinuing to use repressive meas-
ures against civilians. A number
of pedestrians were forced to un-
dress completely while they were
being searched. They were exposed
to the cold for approximately one
hour. Others were beaten in what
appeared to be well-organized ri-
oting.
. The rioters stopped pedestrians
at random and asked if they were
Jewish. If the answer was in the
affirmative, they set upon their
victims, beating them and robbing
them of money and valuables.
_FLEE TO ARMY CARS
The incidents occurred simulta-
neously in different parts of the
city. When the persons assaulted
called for help, the attackers fled
to military armored cars which
apparently were waiting for them.
Earlier, eight members of the
Hebrew National Opera were in-
jured, two of them seriously, when
they were fired upon by an ar-
mored car enroute to Tel Aviv.

Jerusalem Division :
into 3 Zones -Urged

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Division
of Jerusalem into three separate
zones is suggested in a report pre-
pared by Chief Justice Sir William
Fitzgerald, who was named last
year to draft a recommendation
for solution of the impasse result-
ing from Arab refusal to rotate
the Jerusalem mayoralty with
Jews.
Under the Fitzgerald plan, which
will be made public next week,
there will be a Jewish zone, an
Arab zone and the Old City, which
will be under the administration
of representatives of all three
faiths, headed by a government
official.
The Jewish and Arab ..zones will
be administered by elected as-
semblies, from which a joint muni-
cipal authority will be selected to
deal with matters affecting the
city as a whole.
