aspects of scouting. This general

EW YORK--Three Greenebaums,
N father
and sons, became Eagle

Scouts in a mass decorating cere-
mony, PM revealed recently. They
are William A. Greenebaum, 44,
and William Jr., 15, and Julian, 14.
The senior Grcenebaum is chair-
man of the troop committee of
Troop 405, and the boys are mem-
bers of the troop. He is a com-
pact, olive-complexioned man with
thin, wavy black hair, a Cornell
graduate and head of a Jersey
City firm which manufactures
men's accessories.
What made him decide to be-
come an Eagle Scout at the age
of 44?
"That was really brought on by
the boys," Greenebaum said. "They
were going to become Eagles and
they wanted me to join. They
kind of talked me into it."

104 SCOUT BADGES
"A LONG TIME AGO," Julian
explained enthusiastically, "he
said that if Bill and I became
Eagle Scouts, he'd become one,
too."
"I said that to encourage them,"
Greenebaum said.
"Yeah," Bill added a bit sourly,
"and then he needed encourage-
ment."'
"I was only lacking one merit
badge," Greenebaum continued.
"That was in bird study."

"Better be careful, Dad," Julian
warned.
"A Baltimore oriole ..." Greene-
baum thought a moment. "You
can tell it mostly by its color—
the orange of the wings, black on
its wingtips, and black head."

"Well," said Greenebaum un-

nest."
"That can mean almost any-
thing," Billy said.
"Oh, the nest hangs from the
tree," Greenebaum recalled.
"That's it!" both boys cried out.
Billy ran out of the room and
came back with a book on birds.
On its cover was a picture of a
bird with an orange body and
black wings.
"That's a Baltimore oriole," Billy
said.

Joseph M Proskauer, (left) president of the American Jewish
Committee, and Henry Monsky (right) president of Bnal Brith,
have issued a country-wide call for Jewish leadership to attend
the first national conference of the Joint Defense Appeal at the
Coronado Hotel, St. Louis, Jan. 4, 5 and 6. It is expected that
more than 1,000 Jewish leaders from every state will attend.

"Anybody can do that," Billy
said. "All you have to do is to
be big and stick your arms out."

During Greenebaum's active
years in the Scouts 30 years ago,
he managed to get 12 of the re-
quired badges and 14 optionals,
which was one required badge
short of being an Eagle.
Last Summer, Greenebaum said,
Billy and Julian were elected to
the National Scout Honor Society,
Order of the Arrow, and were
pretty close to becoming Eagles,
so he started to brush up on his
birds in order to make good his
promise.

Grcenebaum said, he was required
to identify 40 birds he had seen
in the field by their color, call,

Mrs. Greenebaum, who seemed
to be as much of a Scout expert
as anyone in the family, inter-
rupted to explain the Scouts'
merit badge system. There are
104 badges, she said. A Scout
needs 21 to become an Eagle.
Of these 21, 13 are in specifically
designated subjects. The remain-
ing eight are chosen by the
Scout himself.
