of the U.S. and Canada met at

cently for the National Youth In-

tional association of 295 Jewish
community centers and YM-YW

Out of their round-table dis-
cussions and their exchange of
ideas came some definite conclu-

part to play in the Jewish Center
policy and program planning, and
they ask for an expansion of cen-

. i rman Shavin, representative of
the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Jewish
Community Center, and one of the
three representatives from the
southern section of JWB to the
institute—addressed delegates at
the annual meeting of the south-
ern section which was held in
Chattanooga recently and gave
his report on conclusions reached
at the institute. The following is
an extract of his talk.

AWAIT OPPORTUNITY

Youth desires to be recognized

f or what it actually is. In us

I, will find powerful forces—
talents now, latent, but which
need only the awakening touch
of opportunity. We look to our
elders to establish the framework
within which we shall build. Let
us know your demands, and you
will find us ready — eager — to
prove ourselves. All we ask is
recognition of our potentialities;
then, opportunity to employ our
weapons of creativeness.
Youth wants social and recre-
ational facilities. Youth wants
cultural and educational facilities.
Youth wants Jewish education.

ation and education. Youth wants
more interfaith projects. Youth
•wants vocational guidance. Youth
wants co-educational social func-
t ions.
Youth wants to know its past,
Its present and its future; whence
we came and where we are going.
Jewish youth cannot expect others
to understand us until we first
understand ourselves.
That's why we want an aware-
ness and understanding of the
Jewish cultural heritage; an un-

Twenty-five years for 'these settlers of Emit Ilarod, which recently
celebrated its 25th anniversary, have been long years of back-
breaking work and bitter privation in carving a home from the
once barren, disease-ridden swamps of the Jezreel Valley. On the
second day of the celebration all the settlers and their guests
visited Ilarod Spring, the birthplace of their settlement, where they
heard veteran settlers recount the rich history of their settlement.
United Palestine Appeal funds gave vital development aid to Ein
Ilarod, which now has more than 1,100 Jewish settlers and im-
migrants, and covers 15,000 dunam of cultivated land.

derstanding of anti-Semitism, its
cause and effect—its manifesta-
tions in education, employment
and social life; a knowledge of
how to cope with it.
POSITIVE EXPERIENCES
That's why youth wants positive
Jewish cultural and educational
experience, an understanding of
the organization of Jewish life in
the community, the nation and
the world. That's why youth
wants to be taught religious sig-
nificances and the role they play
in our environment.
We, as youth, are deeply and
vitally concerned with social and
political issues. We want a voice
in support or rejection of the
decisions which are directly affect-
ing our lives. In short, we, as
thinking, mature individuals want
not a condescending pat on the
head and an occasional smile —
we desire to be heard—our influ-
ence to be felt.
We want indorsement as an
alive and dynamic powerhouse of
ideas, suggestions and actions. We
want to help you and ourselves.
By educating us in our forma-
tive years in the ways of leader-

ship and constructive thinking,
you insure the life of the Jewish
Community Center—and of the
community; for you prepare us to
assume the jobs of direction which
time shall force you to vacate.
By virtue of its age, youth is
thought rash—reckless. But it is
not. This impatience—this impe-
tuosity—is the result of improper
guidance and thwarted ambition
Youth has a stake in the Center;
but only through the help of its
elders can it begin to realize the

total decimation. Proper employ-
ment of these vast riches insures
strength, vitality, and the perpet-

yours lies in the hands of a prop-
erly educated younger generation.
The war has moulded for us a
new sense of values—a sense of
appreciation—a sense of belong-

ANALOGY FOR YOUTH
A Jewish Community Center,
dedicated to the assistance, educa-
tion and welfare of its commun-
ity, stands weak and passive—not
fulfilling its purpose—caught in
the throes of unseen hindering
forces—a deadening lethargy cov-
ering its being.
There is only one type of blood
which can save it—make it a
throbbing alive organism. Then,
two questions arise: Is this blood
available?
And Youth eagerly
cries, "Yes!"
And the second
question, "Will it be used?" And
Youth can but say, "Use us . • ."
The anology is clear. The Jew-
ish Community Center is the for-
tunate of the two. It has avail-
able the resources and the instru
