Dr. Wolf Peisachowitch, late of Dachau, is only 38, but he can already claim several times that number. His record was not made on the oper- ating table. It was made on the line forming outside the Nazi gas chambers. Dr. Peisachowitch had privi- leges. He had been the chief physi- cian at the Schavel Ghetto in Lithuania. At Dachau, the jailers found him expert enough, though a Jew, to trust their families to him for medical attention. He treated the Nazis so well they were afraid to lose him or even annoy him. The only fee he took was the right to examine all Jews who had been selected for extermina- tion because they were too ill or weak to work. During five years of internment, he scratched thousands of names off the waiting list for death. He sent the condemned to bed, wan- gled food and drugs for them, and made them strong enough to tot- ter back to their labor and a re- prieve from destruction. • • • REMAINS IN GERMANY WOLF PEISACHOWITCH is still in Germany, but he no longer has to buy Jewish lives with Nazis lives. He is doing a full-time Jew- ish job now. He is director of Munich's Jewish Hospital. He runs a clinic, a nursing school and a medical seminar. Most important of all, he is also a symbol—of the vitality which in this despited land has made the Jews of Munich one of the most dynamic communities in Europe. There are about 8,000 Jews in this city of National Socialism's birth. This does not include the many thousands more who live in displaced persons' camps in the Munich area. The 8,000 in what Is known as the Jewish Community are those who set up "homes" of their own, some kind of makeshift dwelling, temporary and pathe- tically inadequate, because the DP shelters reminded them of the con- centration camps, and they could not endure another day of that, not even of the memory. Even under normal circum- stances, the energy of the Jews of Munich would be singular. When the sufferings they have endured —and the frustrations they are en- during—are taken into account, the energy begins to verge on the miraculous. So do its results. In nearby Berchtesgarden, for example, actually within sight of the proud crag where Adolf Hitler once looked out from an "Eagle's Nest upon his "Judenrein" world, Munich's Jews have taken over a swank hotel and converted it Into a sanitorium for the sick and the weary. Around this nucleus, in build- ings requisitioned through the American Army, the Jews are organizing a community center entirely dedicated to training for tomorrow.
