Ferguson's addiction to investigative un- dertakings have hardly helped to qualify him as a leader in the Senate. Here is his , opportunity to show that he can be a leader of men in a just battle. Let him rise and challenge Bilbo. He will thus earn the plaudits of all sane and honest Americans. Fight Fire With Fire It is bad enough that we have an ex- cess 'of "Sha, sha Jews" who timidly ad- vise the silent treatment as the best way to combat blatant anti-Semitism. Now comes Commentary magazine which gives us the views of a "Gentile, one of the foremost practitioners of public relations in this country" who in an anonymous article, "I Wish They Wouldn't Do That," tries to tell us, too, that we should fight anti-Semtism with haughty disdain for the hate-mongers and by being "serene and dignified." How can he know that silent treatment has never worked; that disdain and dig- nity have brought ridicule and then an- nihilation; that silence has always been interpreted as resignation and coward- ice?" The usual rules on public relations do not seem to make sense when it comes to battling anti-Semitism. To combat it, there is only one command: "Fight fire with fire." World Zionist Congress The concept of a Provisional Hebrew Government for Palestine intrigues the imagination, makes the blood course swift- ' er in bodies that have undergone much blood-letting in recent years. It bespeaks decision,. finality and courage. It means that Jews have taken the bull by the horns and recognized that Britain's ruth- less policy in Palestine is no local expedi- ent but part of a vast program of empire. It signifies that the Jews are out to make Palestine their Homeland, come what may, so that two or three million of their broth- ers can be saved from extinction and so that all Jews can hold their heads up as a people with a land of their own. The idea of a Provisional Government is the property of Peter Bergson and his ise and timidity and get down to fighting a revolution. 1[ The Visiting Editor The Christmas Tree (See Dr. Goldberg's column on the same subject, page 3) Running the danger of having our col- umnist Segal throw verbal cudgels at our editorial head, we would like to take is- sue with certain Jewish parents, who at this time of the year make a grand dis- .play of their "tolerance" and broadmind- edness by purchasing Christmas trees for their children. The Christmas tree, to the Christian, is a beautiful symbol of "peace. on earth and goodwill to men." So why shouldn't we, modern up-to-date Jews accept that sym- bol? We, too believe in peace on earth and goodwill to men, they argue to their Jewish conscience. Which is all right with us, if they want to accept Christianity. This is a free country and we can worship as we please. But to make the Christmas tree a sym- bol of Judaism as well, is stretching the analogy too far. For it is also a symbol of the Christ story, and we know how the perverson of that story has led to the butchery of our people. We too have beautiful symbols—Jewish symbols which could be made as appeal- ing to the imaginative mind of the child as the Christmas tree. We have our palm leaves, our ethrogim, our Chanukah gifts, our four Passover cups. But, as one edi- torial writer puts it, we have as yet to see our Christian neighbors adopt these symbols because of their beauty or be- cause of their religious significance. May we conclude this suggestion with a paragraph from an editorial published in the Detroit Jewish Chronicle? "Let parents who are looking for some- thing to make home love more tangible look into the ways of celebrating Chanu- kah and Purim more intensively. Let the lights shine on Chanukah. Let the 'drei- dels' spin. On Purim let the story be told again and again. There is nothing wrong with the tree or the ceremony connected with it. It is a ceremony connected with. the regular worship of Jesus. It is beautiful, it is ap- pealing. But it is Christian." Bnai IJrith Messenger, Los Angeles, Cal.
