British Troops Riot,
Demand Martial Law

Push Uhl Plans for 1947

JERUSALEM (JTA) — At least one Jew was re-
ported injured and several shop windows smashed in a
riot by British troops in Nathanya.
Versions of the incident differed, with police stating
that the violence had occurred when soldiers of the Royal
Ulster Rifles got into a fight with some paratroopers,

sir

He said that the Palestine Arabs
will not participate in the London
conference if the ex-Mufti is not
invited.
He revealed that the Higher
Committee has drawn up "certain
resolutions to solve the Palestine
problem," which, he said, would
"have an immediate effect on the
situation and be a surprise to the
country.
The Haganah radio charged this
week that British military author.
ities are "gambling on carrying
out pogroms against Palestine's
Jews," and warned that it was
imperative that a disciplined, uni-
fied resistance movement be main-
tained in order to meet any even-
tualities.
The broadcast hit out against
"blind terror inflicted on English
Innocents" and the threat by the
extremists that the terror would
be extended to Jews who opposed
them.

British Give Agency
Week to Halt Attacks

LONDON (JTA) — The Daily
Telegraph in a dispatch from its
Jerusalem correspondent reports
that High Commissioner Cunning-
ham in Ms most recent interview
with Isaac Ben Zvi, president of
the Jewish National Council, said
that he would give the Agency's
plan for halting terrorism no more
than a week's trial.
If its measures are not imme-
diately effective, Sir Alan is re-
ported to have said, the army and
police forces will re-Impose string-
ent restrictions which were recent-
ly lifted as a conciliatory gesture
toward the Jewish community.

Provisional Rule
in Zion Forseen

(Continued from Page 3)
is on with the debut of the
Freiheit-backed "Jewish Life," a
few weeks after the first issue
of the orthodox magazine of the
same name. Bets are being taken
as to which will have the longest
life span .. .

Is the "British Magazine," which
made its bow in New York a few
days ago, a British government
publication?
An anti-Fascist Jewish World
Conference is being planned for
early next year in Europe . . . It
will be attended by a large dele-
gation from Palestine. Unless the
British put the same stay at home
order to work that they used to
keep Hebrew University students
from attending the World Student
Congress at Prague this summer.

Request Faces Rejection in London;
Jew Is Injured in Nathanya Fighting

while private reports said that
the soldiers had aimed their at-
tacks at Jews.
British Army authorities are
urging the Palestine government
to place the country under mar-
tial law, it was revealed this week.
It is understood that High Corn-
missioner Sir Alan Cunningham
demanded that Isaac Ben Zvi,
president of the Jewish National
Council, state definitely whether
Jewish national institutions are
prepared to cooperate with the
government in checking terrorist
activities and also insisted on
knowing what measures these in-
stitutions have decided upon.
DENIED IN LONDON
A Jewish Agency spokesman de-
nied that the high commissioner
told Ben Zvi that he was prepar-
ing to turn administration of the
country over to the army. How-
ever, it is known that military
leaders argue that the current
wave of terror, which has been
taking a daily toll of British troops,
amounts to a state of war neces-
sitating the proclamation of mar-
tial law.
(In London, the Colonial Office
said that the imposition of mar-
tial law in Palestine is not being
contemplated).
It was learned that after the
Haganah's warning last week to
the terrorist groups to cease their
activities, strong measures are be-
ing considered by Haganah leader-
ship. A Jewish Agency spokesman
said that measures have already
been taken to combat terrorism,
but he did not specify what.
JEEP BLOWN UP
During the weekend, a jeep car-
rying five paratroopers was blown
up by a landmine on the highway
between Haifa and Tel Aviv. One
soldier was seriously wounded and
the other four suffered minor in-
juries,
Searches were continuing in
Jewish quarters of Jerusalem and
a road check was set up outside
Tel Aviv to screen all vehicles.
The ugly mood of the jittery
troops was demonstrated when
three persons who were caught in
the streets without their Identifi-
cation papers were taken to the
Jaffa police station and so badly
manhandled that they required
first aid.
Republican Sen. Wayne Morse
of Oregon has arrived here. He
declared that in his recent tour
of DP camps in Europe, he found
that the refugees desire to go to
Palestine, and, therefore, he wish-
es to see "Jewish enterprise" here
at first hand.
Jacob Javits, Republican con-
gressman-elect from New York,
who has been touring the country,
visited Tel Aviv on Sunday, where
he was received by Mayor Israel
Rokach.
NO PARTITION, ARAB SAYS
Before leaving for Cairo, where
he is reported going to become
general secretary of the Arab
League, Jamal Hussein', vice-
chairman of the Palestine Arab
Higher Executive, reiterated offi-
cial Arab opposition to partition.

Leaders from all over the U. S. attended the national United Jew-
ish Appeal convention last week in Atlantic City, which set a
quota of $170,000,000 for 1947. Among them were Edwin Rosenberg,
left, president of United Service for New Americans; William
Rosenwald, center, national chairman of UJA; and Stanley C.
Myers, right, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and
Welfare Funds.

Chanukah Story
Again Recounted

(Continued from Page 3)
sought pure oil especially prepar-
ed for the "ner tomid" they found
only a small vessel left. It con-
tained enough fuel to last one
day. Miraculously, however, this
little quantity lasted for eight
days and nights until other pure
oil was prepared. Once more the
flame of Judaism burned brightly
before the altar of God — the
eternal light of the eternal people!
"Nes gadol haya sham" — a
great miracle occured there, is
the Chanukah motto. The mirac-
ulous nature of historical events
is usually viewed with skepticism
by us moderns. But was it not
a miraculous thing that the vic-
tory of a band of guerillas over
the Greco-Syrian armies meant
the perpetuation of Judaism it-
self?
The fact that we and our fam-
ilies stand before our Menorahs
and kindle the Chanukah lights
is hardly less of a miracle. We
too represent a generation of
Jews that must strive more than
ever for the perpetuation of the
Judaic values which former gen-
erations have guarded and be-
queathed to us.
A light does not burn unless
provided with fuel. It is our duty
to provide the fuel of sincerity
and devotion to feed the light of
Judaism. Any person with the
true Jewish sentiment must feel
these things deeply when he sees
the Chanukah menorahs of many
ages and lands, which have sur-
vived to our time. (The Museum
of Jewish Ceremonial Objects at
the Jewish Theological Seminary
has several splendid examples.)
One begins to see this strength
and binding force of' our Jewish
practices. He becomes one with
Jews who fashioned those lamps
and who used them, as he will use
his own, when Chanukah comes.
And the Jew who examines them
lights his own menorah with re-
newed reverance and emotion.

SANATORIUM OPENED
ROME (JTA)—A tuberculosis sa-
natorium for Jewish refugees in
Italy was opened in Merano, In
north central Italy. It has a 140
bed capacity and modern equip-
ment.
