The Jewish Community Council
has extended for another week its
drive to obtain signatures on the
fair employment practice petitions
being circulated throughout the
community.

Rabbi Leon Fram, chairman of
the council's community relations
committee announced that the
signatures already -returned to the
Community Council office are in
excess of 10,000.

"It is known," Rabbi Fram said,
that while the Jewish community
has been blanketed with petitions,
a great number of individuals
have signed petitions which were
returnable to other participating
organizations. For that reason,
even the large number of signa-
tures already obtained by the Jew-
ish Community Council does not
reflect the actual support which
the measure is receiving In our
community.

"The extension of time makes it
possible for us to search out the
remaining few that have not
signed and request their support.
Petitions may also be signed in
the office of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council."

The campaign seeks the signa-
tures of 155,000 qualified voters.

NOT FOR VON PAPEN
IN THE INNER RECESSES of
the New York Times we found
three column inches of vet), good
news . . . It seems that the small
German town of Lauf, which Is
near enough to Nurenberg to have
heard Hitler address the Nazi
conventions at the latter city with-
out the help of radios, has served
notice that they don't want Fritz
von Papen around.

With a clearer idea of guilt
for fascist crimes than the In-
ternational Military Tr ibunal
which acquitted Third Reich's ace
diplomat, the people of Lauf
promised that if Von Papen vis-
ited their sanitarium, they'd
hang him the moment he arrived.
Needless to say, Fritz will not be
going to the Lauf Sanitarium
for his health . . .
Some of you may remember
Max Reinhardt's production of
Franz Werfel's "The Et e r n a l
Road" in 1936 . . . In this biblical
spectacle, Sidney Lumet, son of
Yiddish actor Baruch Lumet, made
his stage debut at the age of 11.
He was the only actor, in a cast
that included Sam Jaffe, that
could make Reinhardt cry. Today
Sidney Lubet has one of the lead-
ing roles in Ben Hecht's "A nag
Is Born."
Bob Fitzgerald, an Irish tenor,
is the latest addition to the show
at the Old Romanian, a kosher
Broadway nite spot.
