Seventy landsmanshaft organiza-
tions in the Detroit area will at-
tend a special relief conference
sponsored by the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee Sunday, Dec. 15
at the Jewish Community Center.
Featured speakers will be Nor-
man V. Gilmovsky, director of the
council of organizations of the
United Jewish Appeal; Solomon
Tarashansky, JDC landsmanshaft
director; and Isidore Sobeloff, ex-
ecutive director of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation.
Over 300 Landsmanshaft dele-
gates are expected. Landsman-
s haften—benevolent groups whose
members immigrated decades ago
to the U. S., where they formed
societies bearing the names of
their native communities — have
contributed over $2,000,000 this
year to the United Jewish Appeal,
from which the JDC receives its
funds, it was explained. In addi-
tion, landsmanshaft groups con-
tribute funds directly to the JDC
earmarked for special relief proj-
ects in specified overseas coin.
munities. These projects are sup-
plementary to the regular JDC
activities in nearly every country
in Europe.
Gilmovsky, who returned re-
cently from a survey of the con-
ditions of Jewish survivors in Eu-
rope, will report on his findings.
He visited Jewish communities in
Poland, France and the displaced
persons camps of Austria and Ger-
many.
