The spirit and vitality of Jew-
ish displaced persons is nowhere
better indicated than their call
for books as well as bread, ac-
cording to Dr. M. Jacob Joslow,
educational director of the Joint
Distribution Committee in Ger-
many, who spoke before the Junior
Service Group Sunday at Shaarey
Zedelt.
"There is a tremendous thirst
for knowledge a n d education
among Jewish survivors in the
camps and centers of Germany,"
Dr. Joslow declared.
"Men and women forbidden to
practice their trades and profes-
sions, young people whose educa-
tion was suddenly interrupted,
children whose only schools were
the brut al lz in g concentration
camps and slave labor gangs of
Nazism—all show an amazing de-
sire for learning." Joslow said,
"The Jewish DP's themselves have
agreed on a compulsory education
which requires all youngsters un-
der 16 to attend school."
To All the "cultural vacuum"
created by Nazism for these Jews
and to help the survivors find
educational opportunities, Dr. Jos-
low pointed out, the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee has inaugu-
rated an 'extensive educational and
cultural program encompassing
kindergarten to post-graduate stu-
dies as well as vocational training
and retraining programs.

Dr. Joslow was formerly prin-
cipal of Ludlow (Mass.) High
School. His school operates under
a plan similar to the model
"Springfield Plan" to further in-
tercultural understanding in the
schools.
The December meeting of the
Junior Service Group will be a
"Palestinian Night," devoted to a
discussion of Zionism and Jewish
culture in Palestine.
