Another source Indicating the small size of the Jewish community of Michigan at that time is a statistical report issued almost 20 years later. In September, 1880, the Union of American Hebrew Congrega. tiohs published the first statistics of the Jews of the United States, state by state, and the estimated number of Jews in Michigan for that year 2320, ( ,se s e ,,,pou. b 4L cation1Losf , het.i,, Amt e j m r ic ra an raJ ti e v w el" ish,, „,,.. is giv „as ,3, 1 dumber' of Jews Who residoa in Mighigan in fl \ :nit' fU y hun- of the • • os THERE WERE 210 JEWISH SOLDIERS from Michian in the g Union Army, a remarkable showing considering the sma ll Jewish population in the state at that time (see Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society, No. 3, page 38.) In his book, Wolf lists by name 176 Michigan Jewish soldiers, 130 of whom are classified as to commands and 46 unclassified. Of this number one Jew is listed as having attained the rank of major, two with the rank of captain, four with the rank of lieutenant, 24 as having made the supreme sacrifice and one having died as a prisoner. Wolf's list 1s as follows: o the im and nrgani- of one there never- :Tel is le and i ade ,ding the' Civil War The number of Jews who dis- tinguished themselves by their bra- very and who attained high ranks and other forms of recognition was also correspondingly large. Wolf lists over 7,000 Jews who took part in the conflict on both sides, out of an estimated Jewish population of 150,000, many of them recent immigrants. There are no statistics available of the Jewish population in Michi- gan during the Civil War. But that their number was small is evidenced by the fact that at the beginning of the war, in 1861, SIMON WOLF there were only two small congregations in the entire State of Michi- gan—Beth El of Detroit (organized in 1850) and Beth Israel of Jack- son (organized in 1860). PLACE, Director ict tuber aturermrir Sisterhood and Alen to Sponsor Program THE - STANDARD WORK on the participation of Jews in the Civil War is Simon Wolf's The American Jew as Patriot, Soldier and Citizen.' ,Wolf, who lived in Washington through the war and knew many.of the facts, collected in this book all the information he could • regarding American Jews in the Union and Confederate armies. Although Wolf was not able to get every fact, because many of the states :did not have full records and many soldiers were not listed by' their religion but by their home city, his book shows that the Jews fought on both sides with Arai . and valor and that "the enlistment of Jewish soldiers, North and South, reached propor- tions considerably in excess of their ratio to the general popula- tion." ;ELMO' Ihasis • " - Welcomed Back :• `it r Participation of Michigan Jews s Val the :his new •• , nai,McAr S Music 6Varcriiile' ART1CtE 40 ulate y lew • Pashi ,e recently We Wilk great step our corn. n fashion, 'live SWISH CHRONICLE and The Le al Chronicle , Abraham Ackerman Samuel Ackerman Lewis Arnold Marcus Arnold Marcus Arnold Michael Ash David Pall Adolph Barlow E.
