QUESTION: What was your re-
action when you heard that
Rabbi Hershman had retired
after 39 years of service to
Detroit Jews?
MRS. IRWIN PHILLIPS, 3121 Chi-

Since Rabbi Hershman has been
1 a sick man for the past few years,
I think he did a wise thing in re-

I think Rabbi Adler will do a won-

I am a friend of Rabbi Hersh-
man and feel that he did the right
thing in retiring, since his health
has not been
too good lately.
He certainly de-
serves a rest.
I do not think
Rabbi Hersh-
man will com-
pletely iso late
himself from
the community.
He will still
serve us in some
capacity and
will be busy at his writings.
Fortunately, he has a very fine

I think the community will miss
Rabbi Hershman. His untiring ef-
forts on behalf of his people and
his great understanding of their
problems have
made him one
of 'netroit's
3reatest leaders.
I think he
should still de-
vote some time
to the commu-
nity If his
health will per-
mit it. Today,
we need men of
his ability to
lead us in our struggles.
He has done big things for De-
troit's Jews. I hope he can still
find time to carry on, if only to
a limited degree, and still enjoy
a well-earned rest.

British. Raid Offices
of Rabbi and Zionists
Rome and Milan Quarters Searched
in Hunt for Embassy Blast Clues
ROME (JTA)—British security agents this week
raided the offices of the organization of Jewish refugees
in Milan, while in Rome the chief of the political section
of the police force announced that three Jews among 15
persons arrested after the bombing of the British embassy
here are believed to be implicated in the blast.
Their names were given as Cha-
im Waimber, Pinkus Widman and
a man named Schaak. Meanwhile,
police are investigating one Jacob
Onetzi, who is reported to be the
man who arranged the delivery to
correspondents of a "communique"
of the Irgun Zvai Leumi assum-
ing responsibility for the bombing.
Military police also raided the
headquarters of the emigration of-
fice of the Zionist Organization in
Rome as well as the office of
Chief Rabbi David Prato. Although
no explanation was given for the
raids, the police took specimens of
letters typed on the typewriters
in both offices and it Is assumed
that the searches were connected
with The bombing.
The Organization of Jewish Ref-
ugees in Italy, the Union of Jew-
ish Communities in Italy and the
Zionist Federation of Italy mean-
while issued a joint statement
declaring that none of their mem-
bers had any connection with the
British embassy explosion.

TELL HEALTH PLANS
On Monday the blueprint for a
large-scale health welfare program
designed "to salvage in Palestine
what remains of the Jewish people
in Europe" was outlined to the
convention. It will provide hospi-
talization for all newcomers to
Palestine who need it, convalescent
care, a tuberculosis prevention
program and an enlarged child
welfare effort.
Mrs. Samuel Rosensohn of New
York, treasurer, reported that 750
chapters in 47 states had collected
$5,774,417 in the last 12 months for
Palestine. No deductions, she said,
were made for administration.
A campaign to add 100,000 mem-
