Synagogue Built on Willis

and Brush Streets

(This is the ninth and last article of a series
on the first 50 years of Congregation Shaarey Zedek)

IN 1908, DAVID W. SIMONS, one of the leading members of
Shaarey Zedek, was elected to the presidency of the congregation. He
held the post for the next 12 years, following which he was honored
with the office of Honorary President. The other officers elected in
1908 were Samuel Rosenthal, vice president; A. Benjamin, secretary;
and William B. Saulson, treasurer. The trustees elected were; William
Friedman, Samuel

time one of Detroit's finest residential neighborhoods. But it took
three years of hard work on the part of the members and the Ladies
Auxiliary before sufficient funds could be raised for the new building.
Finally, on Nov. 16, 1913, the cornerstone laying ceremonies were
held amid great rejoicing. Not until two years later, however, in the
fall of 1915, was the imposing structure completed and all activities
housed therein.
The leaders in the movement to build the new synagogue, and
those who aided most in making such a building a reality, were
Rabbi A. M. Hershman, David W. Simons, Abraham Jacobs, Jacob
Friedberg, Aaron Klein and Isaac Shetzer.

THE LAST CANTOR who officiated in the Winder Street syna-
gogue was Cantor Dlugoff who was succeeded in 1915 by Cantor Abra-
ham Minkowsky.
When the United Synagogue of America, the national organization
of conservative synagogues, was organized in 1913, Shaarey Zedek was
one of the first congregations to become affiliated with this body and
thus officially joined the ranks of the conservative movement in
America.
During World War I, the Ladies Auxiliary of Shaarey Zedek, un-
der the presidency of Mrs. Wolf Kaplan, transformed the basement
rooms of the synagogue into hospital sewing rooms, and practically
every member of the auxiliary worked for the Red Cross.

ACCORDING TO Fred M. Butzel, the best informed person on
the history of Detroit Jewry, soon after the arrival of Dr. Louis
Grossman as rabbi of Beth El (December 1885), a dispute arose which
led to the formation of an Independent relief society by the members
of Shaarey Zedek. The society took the name of "Jewish Relief So-
ciety" and duplicated the work of the Beth El Relief Society.
These two rival organizations existed until November, 1899 when
Dr. Leo M. Franklin, who came to the pulpit of Beth El in January,
189 9, succeeded in amalgamating the Beth El Relief Society, Jewish
Relief Society and other charitable groups into the United Jewish
Charities.

LITTLE IS KNOWN about the charity work of Shaarey Zedek
during the early years of its existence. It may be assumed, however,
that the congregation dispensed charity on a small scale along the
same lines as did Beth El, the mother congregation.
In December, 1869, the Beth El Relief Society was organized "for
the purpose of relieving all deserving JeWish applicants" and the two
congregations (Beth El and Shaarey Zedek) worked harmoniously in
the raising and dispensation of funds.
In the 1880's, during the presidency of Martin Butzel of the Beth
El Relief Society, a Mr. Danto was the secretary,
