Family Fleeing Poland Hunts Refuge
Others Given Long Terms in Prison
as Officials Crack Down on Killers
WARSAW, (JTA)—Polish military and judicial au-
thorities have launched a concerted drive to stamp out
the bandit gangs which have been terrorizing Jews
throughout Poland for more than a year and which have
been responsible for the death of several hundred.
A detachment of 40 which operated along the rail
lines between Kukow and Mied-
zyrzec, dragging Jews from trains
and killing them, was rounded up
by the militia after a fierce en-
gagement during which 10 ban-
dits were killed.
At Katowice, a military court
sentenced to death three brigands
who had murdered many Jews in
the Katowice-Bielske district. Two
of their confederates received
terms of life imprisonment and 15
years, respectively.
At Bialystok a fascist leader
named Waclaw Maliszewski and
his assistant have been sen-
tenced to be hanged, while in
Cracow another military tribu-
nal doomed the leader of a
band which dragged Jews from
trains between Cracow and
Nowy Sacz.
In Stettin, a criminal court sen-
tenced a militiaman, Karel Dobr-
zanski, to life imprisonment for
firing Into a group of Jewish chil-
dren, gravely injuring two of
them.
In pronouncing the verdict, the
president of the court said that
"the murder of Jews is Poland's
greatest shame." He added that
he had refrained from imposing
the death sentence because of the
defendant's "poor mentality."
Russia Drops Ban
on Austria Passage
VIENNA, (JTA)—The Soviet Tian
on passage of refugees through
the eastern zone of Austria, im-
posed three weeks ago, has appar-
ently been lifted. The influx of
refugees from Poland and other
countries has resumed and 250
are arriving daily.
Five thousand Polish Jews are
still massed on the Polish-Czech
border, however, waiting for the
frontier to be reopened. The
Czech authorities closed the bor-
der about a month ago after
several protests by Britain.
There are about 2,000 refugees
in the various Jewish hostels in
Vienna, but the DP's move into
the American zone almost as
quickly as new ones arrive. U.S.
authorities are admitting all dis-
placed persons.
At an emergency reception center in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, a young refugee fleeing
from the
terrors of Polish anti-Semitism rests in the courtyard after a dangerous flight across the border with
his mother and father. Enroute to the U. S. Zone in Germany and seeking a road to Palestine, this
family is typical of those who depend on the United Jewish Appeal for help. Some 100,000 Polish Jews
have streamed into the American zone in recent months increasing the problem of sustaining them.
100 Oswiecim Guards
Face Trial in Poland
WARSAW, (JTA)—The trial of
Rudolf Hoess, former commander
of the Oswiecim death Camp,
which was originally scheduled to
open Nov. 5, has been postponed
indefinitely because the Polish
government plans to try him to-
gether with 100 guards and other
members of the Oswiecim staff
who were recently turned over to
Poland.

Among the war criminals
handed over to the Polish mili-
tary mission in Berlin was Gen.
Jacob Sporrenberg, who was
chief of the S.S. police in Lu-
blin during 1913 and 1944. Spor-
renberg was ono of the organ-
izers of the infamous Maidanek
camp and was responsible for
the wholesale extermination of
he Jews in Lublin.
The Polish mission is also try-
ing to secure the extradition of
Gen. Stroop, who suppressed the
Warsaw ghetto revolt.
The mission has received from
American authorities comprehen-
sive files of the criminal experi-
ments carried out on inmates of
the concentration camps by Ger-
man scientists. The Jewish Cen-
tral Historical Commission has
requested permission to represent
the Jews at the forthcoming trials
of Hans Dubow, torturer of Lodz
Jews, and Ludwig Fischer, known
as the "hangman of Warsaw."

Peron Friendliness
to Jews is Refuted
BUENOS AIRES, (JTA) — The
Committee against Racism and
Anti-Semitism has published a
statement commenting on Presi-
dent Juan Peron's New Year mes-
sage to the Jews, in which he as-
serted that the Argentine govern-
ment was opposed to anti-Semit-
ism and was friendly to the Jews.
The committee declares that the
actions of the government do not
coincide with Peron's statement.
It points out that immigration is
Practically closed to Jews, that
persons responsible for attacks
upon Jewish personnel at the Bu-
enos Aires University medical
school are still unpunished, and
that the Alianza Libertadora Na-
Clonalista, the most rabid anti-
Semitic party in the country, is
permitted to operate without op-
Position from the government.

This page is framed by all 48 states. They're
accurate in outline but not in relative size.
Without peeking into Junior's geography book,
find your own state first. Then see how many
moro you can identify. (Answers buried below.)
Ten right means you're bright. Twenty makes you
an honor student. Thirty qualifies you as Secre•
tary of States!
So what? So the folks who own America's
business-managed electric companies live in every
one of these states. They include a lot of your '
friends and neighbors—and probably you, too.
How come? Well, several million Americans
have invested their savings in electric companies
directly. Some 48 million more have invested
indirectly—through savings bank accounts and
life insurance policies. Banks and insurance com-
panies, entrusted with your funds, like to put 'em
to work in sound utility securities.
As a result, almost every American family has
a stake in the self-supporting, tax-paying electric
companies that provide most of America's power.
Thanks largely to good business management, the
price of electricity has come down while other
prices have gone way up—and this country en-
joys the best electric service in the world.
