Will not surrender the right to meet
armed attack by armed resistance. We
have heard this demand from the British
before. We have only one answer:
We will not give up our arms nor the
right to bring Jews to Palestine nor the
right to settle them on Jewish land in
Palestine. Jewish self-defense is a funda-
mental of the Jewish fight fbr survival.

Give to the Red Feather Fund

The Jews of Detroit are so completely
civic-minded and so ready to share with
others that it is hardly necessary to re-
mind them that the Red Feather Commu-
nity Chest Drive opens Monday and will
last to Nov. 13. We are certain' that their
response will be liberal. ''

We want to point out that this is an
all-city campaign and that five Jewish
Welfare Federation Agencies will re-
ceive pad of their funds from the
Chest.

•
A total of $270,504 has been allotted
tO these agencies. They include Jewish
Social Service Bureau,' Jewish Community
Center, North End Clinic, Hebrew Free
Loan Association and the Fresh Air So-
ciety.
We urge every Detroit Jew to make a
Red Feather , contribution for the welfare
if his city and his community. Welcome.

Who Will Make the Attempt?

The idea of communally supported rab-
bis and an American type of Judaism, nei-
ther Reform, Conservative or Orthodox,
may still be some years distant, but would
be considerably advanced were one rabbi
or one community or both to begin such
an experiment.
The American type of Judaism idea is
closer than is the 'communally supported
rabbi and the two are not necessarily con-
nected. In fact, as 'rabbis begin to enlarge
the scope of their activities more and
more the proposition of communally-sup-
ported rabbis loses its validity. Still, the
rabbi whose salary came from the com-
munity at large could much more' easily
develop his services and worship to fill
the needs of the day than one wedded to
one of the sects in Judaism.
The line of demarcation between Ortho-
dox and Reform, as has been remarked in
many places, is so indistinguishable now
that except for personalities and habit
and local tradition, a large number of
congregations could very easily drop their
label and recruit members from all three
sects.
Any of the younger' 'rabbis, or a re-
turning chaplain might make the .experi-
ment. He would be pioneering, and even
some years ahead of • the time; but the
rewards are those of the 'pioneer and
would be ample return to the hardy soul
who has the courage and perseverancq to
make the attempt.

No, Mr. Segal, your interpreta-

pretation at all. I am just sorry
that in spite of Haman and Hitler,
you still have learned nothing, Mr.
Segal.
