ACCENT IS ON Y 0 UTH IN PALESTINE

British Sift
the Negev
Settlement

at Pioneers' Move

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —
British military authorities
this week opened an inves-
tigation into the circum-
stances under which "Oper-
ation Land" was carried
out in the Negev by 1,000
Jewish settlers who over-
night established 12 settle-
ments on territory on which
the British planned to es-
tablish military bases.

The military authorities said
they are especially interested in
ascertaining whether the Jewish
settlers brought with them arms
in excess of those usually allowed
by the Palestine government for
defense of a settlement. They ad-
mit that the settlers had a legal
right to occupy the land since it
was legally acquired by the Jew-
ish National Fund.
'RESTRICTED' REGION
The Palestine Arab Higher Com-
mittee announced that it will in-
vestigate the conditions under
which the sale of the Negev land
to the Jewish National Fund was
effected. The announcement said
that the 12 settlements are sit-
uated in the Hebron, Gaza and
Beersheba districts In which land
sales to Jews "are supposed to be
totally restricted."
Evidence of the dismay which
"Operation Land" has caused
among Arab leaders in Pales-
tine was seen in a statement Is-
sued here by Dr. Hassein Kha-
lidi, secretary of the Arab High-
er Committee. He termed estab-
lishment of the new settlements
"a Zionist stunt," and expressed
the hope that it "would not be
accepted by President Truman
and the U. S. Congress as evi-
dence of Palestine's absorptive
capacity."
HOPE FOR DETAINEES
The Palestine government is
preparing to transfer a number of
the Cyprus deportees to the Ath-
lit immigration clearance camp.
About 1,200 persons are due to
be released from Athlit under the

schedule, the Tel Aviv newspaper
Yedioth Achronoth said.
The Palestine Council of the
Mizrachi Organization has voted
overwhelmingly to maintain its
demand for a Jewish state in "an
undivided Palestine," and to re-
ject all partition proposals.
The council protested against
the decision of the Paris meeting
of the Jewish Agency to place a
partition proposal before the Bri-
tish government. It said that all
Mizrachi representatives are bound
to oppose partition at the forth-
coming World Zionist Congress.

A bumper crop of youngsters are growing up in Palestine. From the shadows of hopeless Europe, these
children have come to the Jewish National Home, and in the fields under the warm Palestine sun
and in the school rooms and at play, their minds and bodies grow healthy again. The scars heal, the
years of misery become dim memories. The United Jewish Appeal makes life meaningful for these
youthful survivors of war and oppression.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —Jews are
still being seized and interned in
Latrun despite their acquittal in
court or release on bail pending a
trial. One of the most flagrant
cases is that of 17-year-old Isaac
Bavll who was arrested on May
20 for illegal distribution of leaf.
lets. When he was finally brought
to trial on Sept. 19, the judge
scored the police officials for hav-
ing held him so long without trial.
The judge asked the complain-
ing policeman what would happen
if the accused were acquitted. The
answer was that he would be re-
arrested and interned immediately,
SEIZED AT ONCE
The judge then declared Bath
guilty and sentenced him to six
months imorisoMnent dating - from
the day of his arrest. With the
remitting of one-third of his sen-
tence for good behavior, which is
customary in Palestine, Bavli ac-
tually had to serve only one day.
The following day when he was
released, however, a policeman was
waiting to take him into custody
again.
Two other youths, Samuel Gold.
man and Isaac Eliahu Mizrachi,
also arrested for distributing Ille-
gal handbills, were released on
$200 bail by the chief magistrate
of Jerusalem and the police were
ordered to release them if bail
was posted. Instead they shackled
the two youths and took them off
to Latrun.
More than 150 Jews who have
been detained at Latrun for many
weeks without trial or hearing
went on a hunger strike in pro-
test against the alleged failure of
Jewish organizations to speed
their release. Their hunger strike
coincides with a report that a
British expert is expected here to
advise the British on the erection
of a special prison for Jews near
Latrun.

AGENCY EXCORIATED
The Irgun Zvai Leumi has
launched a violent attack on lead-
ers of the Jewish Agency negoti-
ating in London with the British
government.
"The days of anyone claiming
to speak on behalf of the Yishuv
are numbered," the Irgun said.
The denunciation, contained in
leaflets scattered by pamphlet
bombs that exploded in the cen-
ter of the city, alleged that the
Agency leaders had made conces-
sions in the London talks.
Posters placed on the walls here
reported that two Arab land brok-
ers who sold land to Jews had
been "executed" by an organiza-
tion calling itself the "Arab nigh-
er Fighters." The posters warned
that any Arab selling land to Jews
would be dealt with summarily
for harming the Arab cause.
