and on the screen. He was seen
in such pictures as "Lost Week
End" and "Diamond Horseshoe."
The latest, from all reports, is the
best, "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim"
—which is scheduled for release
within the next week. Laughton is
visiting in Detroit and will leave
soon for New York, where he is
to go into rehearsal for a new
play.

IT'S BEN YOUNG'S MUSIC
that fills the air at the Bowery
and has been
doing so for
over three
years. Not only
does he please
the d an c e pa-
trons with h i s
rhythmic melo-
dies but song
enthusiasts can-
not trip him up
ti on any request
tune, no matter
how old nor
how new.
The current show at the Bowery
is headlined by the handsome
Carlos Ramirez, famous baritone
of stage, screen and radio. This
suave South American is well re-
membered for his singing roles
in such MGM
productions a s
"Night and
Day" and "Two
Girls and a Sai-
lor." He also
starred in
Frank Morgan's
Maxwell House
radio show and
on several occa-
sions as guest
soloist on the
Ford Sunday
Evening Hour.
The two smooth and terrific se-
pia acrobatic dancers, Jesse and
James; the clever whistling of
Minna Lang; the tenor vocals of
Johnny King; the crazy antics of
Frankie Rapp and a flock of
others round out the show.

THE PLACE WAS jumping
with mobs of people who were
clamoring to be waited upon.
And it's no wonder, with the de-
licious food that Col. Maybohm

With Sally Fields

GOD IS EVERYWHERE! It
gave me goose-pimples and brought
tears to my eyes when I heard
the following story. With each tel-
ling I cannot help repeating: "God
is good, God is
everywhere."
A southern
family decided
to adopt a ref-
ugee child and
rather than
wait until the
youngster w a s
sent to t hei r
town, they made
the trip to New
Sally Fields
York where they could have a
wider choice.
In looking over the youngsters
Mrs. A. was attracted to a young
boy about 15. She was told, how-
ever, that in order to take him
she would have to take a sister,
too. The children had been thru
an awful lot together for a num-
ber of years and had seen their
parents burned to death and their
sisters and brother killed.
"Die hartz hott ihr azay getzagen
tzu dem kind" that she agreed to
take both, even, before she saw
the little girl. They were brought
home to Virginia in due time.
When the youngsters were
taken thru the house they saw
an elderly couple's picture on
the wall. The kids trembled with
excitement. It was a few min-
utes before they could coherent-
ly tell their story. The elderly
couple were the grandparents of
the children and the Jpitrents of
Mrs. A.
Mrs. A. had not heard from her
family since shortly after Hitler
took over. A matter of about 15
years.
Inquiries only brought replies
that everyone in that little town
had "disappeared". God is good!
. God is everywhere!

LAST SATURDAY, Oct. 12, put
another birthday under my belt.
And don't you ask me how old I
am, 'cause I "ain't a-talking".
All I can tell you is that I've
been a member of the A.K. (Ac-
tive Kids) class for some time.
Lots of water has flown un-
der the dam since Oct. 12, 1945,
some of it a bit stagnant and a
lot of it I'm grateful for. But
I've learned a long time ago "az
men for nit zindigen."
Nothing is so bad that it could
not (Lord forbid) be worse. So
it's with a prayer in my heart
and an "Ich dank dir Gott far
ass" that I start out on my next
lap. (Maybe it will bring me a
flat? Who knows?)
•
ONLY A FEW DAYS more and
I'll be roaring down with the rest
of the Detroiters to the Phylis
Shever wedding in St. Louis Oct.
20. You know "Phil" is the niece
of the celebrated prima donna
Emma Lazaroff Schaver (I'll take
a little bet Emma will be a sing-
ing "Oh, Promise Me" at the
ceremony).
•
THERE'S AIWAYS a gay crowd
and always a good story at the
Back Stage Bar. Johnny Lewis is
an excellent host. The drinks are
always plentiful and you're sure
to find your favorite one there.
The Back Stage Bar is right next
to the Avenue Theater on WOOd-
ward Av.

CLUB BALI'S new Balinese
dining room has caused a sensa-
tion in town. Beautifully and at-
mospherically done, it is one of
the smartest rooms in this part
of the country.
As was in the case of the open.
ing of their Sarong Room down-
stairs, the Club Bali spared no
effort nor money In making this
exactly what it is—different, smart,
talked about.
Johnny Maher is walking on air
these days so happy is he about
the way the public has received
the Balinese Room.

FROM MORREY BRODSKY
comes the news that he leaves
the Downtown and Adams The-
ater forces as publicity director
Oct. 23 to take over his new •
duties as publicity head of the
El Rancho Hotel in Las Vegas
and the Delmar Hotel in Cali-
fornia. Both are Sandy Adler—
Jack Broder projects. Good luck,
Murry; you're a swell guy and
deserve a good break. IIere's
hoping this is it.

WHAT A LOVELY affair the
Kallman-Cohen wedding was at the
Book Cadillac. Val Lewis, Detroit's
very smart young cateress was
responsible for much of the love-
liness; those simply divine little
hats and muffs which were made
of jewel toned satin and flowers
were designed and made by Val,,.
The gorgeous orchid dyed char-
treuse to blend in with Mrs. Kali-
man's very stunning outfit was
managed by Val . . . The bride is
Rita Sue, daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. Robert Kaltman while the
groom is David Elliot Cohen, the
son of the Lou Cohens.
