DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle

MAN Cr TUE WULF

WITH EDUCATION MONTH in Detroit in its climactic week, it is
11 appropriate that we pay tribute to Abe Kasle, one of the most
devoted workers in the city for the cause of Jewish education.
Here is a man who has giant ambitions—not for himself, but
for the United Hebrew Schools which he is heading for a second
term after years of service on its board. He possesses an innate
compulsion to spread Jewish learning and his immediate goal is to
reach the 50 per cent of Detroit
Jewish boys and girls who get no
religious education of any kind.
.'; Of the 14,000 Jewish children of
, school age in Detroit, only 2,000
receive full time Jewish education
after school, and of these 1,200 are
United Hebrew School pupils.
Kasle's great wish is to see that
figure doubled in the next few
years and he has, accordingly,
immersed himself heart and soul
in the struggle to break down the
massive wall of indifference built
up by thoughtless Jewish parents
around Jewish education.
"I am concerned that Jewish
education should be all that the
term implies," Kasle declared, "a
healthy and wholesome introduc-
tion of our children to the cultural
riches of our people.

"Whatever faults are to be found

are attributable to home and environmental conditions. The competi-
tive system in which we find ourselves aggravates the difficulties.
"Those difficulties must be all overcome. I have faith that
we shall conquer them."
While Kasle's first interest is the schools, he has contributed
much time and money to other communal activities. He is in the
front rank of the fighters for justice and for brotherhood in his work
for Zionism, for Congregation Shaarey 2ecielt, for the Detroit Jewish
Hospital and for relief drives.

workers for the cause of Eretz Israel.
Active in Allied Jewish Campaigns, the Community Fund, the
,
American Jewish Congress and the Detroit Service Group. Kasle
was chairman of the committee that helped purchase the Hillel
Foundation building at the University of Michigan and for secur-
ing the needed funds to free the building of all mortage obligations.
Born 51 years ago in Poland, Kasle came to the United States
in 1909. He settled in Detroit in 1923 after spending some time in
Monroe, Mich., and in Toledo.

HE WAS MARRIED to the former Pearl Silverstein in Detroit, Feb.
HE 14, 1915. They have a daughter Esther (Mrs. Ben Jones) and
three sons, Leonard, who is in his father's firm; Ben, who recently
was discharged from the Navy; and Robert, who is in the Merchant
Marine.
Kasle has four brothers and two sisters, all prominent in com-
munal work In Toledo, Flint, and Indianapolis.
He is head of the Kasle Steel Corp., 678 Goldsmith street. The
