IN THE FALL OF 1876, the frame building on Congress and St.
Antoine streets was sold and torn down and the erection of a new
synagogue, which cost about 327,000, begun.

ing at 8:15 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 8,
in Butzel Hall of the Jewish Com-
munity Center. Detroit young peo-

ON JULY 4, 1877, the ceremonies of the laying of the cornerstone
for the new synagogue on Congress and St. Antoine took place.
The committee in charge consisted of Samuel N. Ginsburg, chair-
man, Jacob Robinson, Marcus
Freud, Jacob Freud, Isaac Epstein,
Ephraim Hamburger, Nathan Bur-
ton and A. M. Barmon.
Special invitations were sent to
all Detroit Jewish organizations
A special invitation was also sent
to the mother congregation, Beth
El, which sent the following in-
teresting reply:
"Your invitation addressed to
the officers and members of Con-
gregation Beth ,El to attend the
celebration of laying the corner-
stone of your new House of Wor-
ship on July 4, 1877, reached the
officers of Congregation Beth El
this day.
"We herewith express our
thanks to your committee and re-
gret It much that the time is too f.–..0...esdimossragiAsiiissmibe---
short for us to make such arrange. 2nd Synagogue of Shaarey Zedek
meats as a body combined to attend as we should have endeavored
to do. Nevertheless, you may expect members of our Congregation
to be present as individuals.

In 1877 the membership was 69. The following membership list of
1877 is the first available complete roster of the congregation: The
officers were: Samuel N. Ginsburg, president; Jacob Freud, vice-presi-
dent; Bernard Barmon, treasurer; Jacob Robinson, secretary; S. Co-
hen, first Shamos, and H. Jacobs, second Shamos.

Trustees were Isaac Epstein, Samuel Fleischman, Ephraim Ham- •
burger, Max Herzberg, Samuel Keiter and George Morris.

THAT THERE WAS A friendly relationship between Beth El
and Shaarey Zedek and that invitations were exchanged between both
congregations for important occasions is also evidenced by the fact
that when Beth El arranged its first elaborate religious school picnic
is
1872, a special invitation was extended to Shaarey Zedek to attend.
