Maybe HE should be angry nine o'clock. This was for me a you against Rev. Schwartz? What .

problem. You ,unaerstand, honor- do you want this court to decide,
Mr. Yamowitz wiped his brow, able judges, that in our line June to do?"

and again looked daggers at the
Rev. Schwartz. The defendant,
during all this time, maintained
a confident air. He showed no
signs of indignation which usual-
ly accompany the plaintiff's reci-
tal of the case. He did not hold
his head in horror and shriek, "I
said that? I said that?" He did
not laugh mockingly at the ab-
surdity of the plaintiff's version.
He did not interrupt shouting "I
should drop down dead this min-
ute, my wife should never see
me alive again if that isn't a lie."
He merely awaited his turn. He
knew he Was, dealing with under.
standing men of affairs who, !lice
himself, are often the butt of un-
just indictment by narrow minded
and excitable clients.
The lawyer spoke up. "Mr. Ya-
mowitz, tell me one thing: is
your daughter married?"
"My daughter, sure she's mar-
ried."
"By Rev. Schwartz's friend?"
"Yes, by this so-called substi-
tute."
"Did Rev. Schwartz pay you
back the deposit?"
"Naturally."
And your wife? How is she
feeling now?"
"My wife—my wife, you know
how women are. Off and on."
'Not hysterical any more?"
"She's still upset. Sure. You
don't get over excitement like
this so quick. But thank God she's
all right, off and on."
"Now, Rev. Schwartz, your
story please."
Rey.fichwartz cleared his throat,
adjusted his black bow tie, step.
ped forward slowly and began:
"Honorable judges, you heard
what Mr. Yamowitz said. I wish
to state that every word is per-
fectly true. I would not criticize
one single word which he stated.
I even have here the contract,
just as he stated."
From his side coat pocket, he
extracted a document. The law.
yer reached for it, and asked,
"Shall I read it to the court?"
Without awaiting a reply, he read,

That is my livaig. no x figured:

No one could contradict what I

they say nine, it's ten. Maybe
they have relatives in New Jersey
or in Far Rockaway they can't
come so prompt, especial Satur-

I made a mistake. The Brooklyn

ing box-ball, the mothers calling
their chlliTren, and the Yiddish
correspondents hotly discussing the
case. Then the business' man
spoke up for the first time.
"Mr. Yamowitz do I understand
correctly that you are suing for
breach of contract?" Mr. Yamo-
witz looked appealingly to the
lawyer. The lawyer explained, "He
means do you want Rev. Schwartz
to pay you for not doing what he
promised?"
"Pay me, Why should he pay
me? Did I give him something?"
"Well, like damages? Your wife
was sick, you say." -
"Sick—sick. She's O.K."
"And you say your daughter
was married by the friend? Did
you pay the friend?"
"Sure. Fifteen dollars. But no
more. No Promise Me."
The Chief Judge was obviously

• Again Mr. Yamowltz took them
into his confidence. He leaned
over the desk and said, "I want
you should give that so-called
Reverend a lecture, he should
come nine o'clock when it says
nine, and not ten, eleven and send
a friend!"
The judges conferred and Mr.
Stern helped. Mr. Yamowitz was
granted his request. The lawyer
was unanimously selectea to deli-
ver the decision.
"Rev. Schwartz," he began, "we
understand that business is busi-
ness, that June is your season and
Saturday night is your busy time.
We understand that you must
provide a living for your family
and yourself. But one important
fact you should bear in mind.
You have no right to take , on
more than you can handle. Will
you promise this court that you
will hereafter be more careful in
this regard?"
Rev. Schwartz answered, "Yes,
honorable judges."
Mr. Yamowitz shook the law-
yer's hand, then the Rabbi's, then
the business manes; then he
turned to Rev. Schwartz and said,
"And don't forget it." He turned
and strode down the center aisle.
Rev. Schwartz remained silent
a moment; finally he said, meek-
ly, "If those people in Brooklyn
were refined I could handle both."
Mr. Stern announced in his
high tenor voice, "Next case, Mrs.
Rosenblum vs. Mr. Rosenblum."
