and you than they'll do if you
jus t give yourself up when they
get here. Pop, you answer the
door. Keep them outside until
Mama says they should come in.
Everyone but Pop come to my
room."
She ran towards a door. "Hur-
ry," she called back as the others
ran after her.
The captain, a very correct Bri-
tish officer, knocked loudly on the
'door. The two hard-bitten pri-
.votes looked around them. One
spat on the mezussah. The captain
saw but made no comment. Im-
patiently he knocked again. Af-
ter a few moments, the door
opened a little bit. Solorfion looked
out nervously. "Yes?" he asked in
a low, frightened voice.
The captain tried to push past
him, but Solomon resolutely kept
the door almost closed. "Yes?" he
asked again in a louder, surer
voice.
We have been told that Ben-
jamin Gruenberg, who Is wanted
by the authorities, is visiting you
tonight."
"My son is not here. I haven't
seen him for some time."
"We know he is here. Tell him
to give himself up."
Solomon shrugged. "No, he is
not here. I don't know where he
is. I have told you so many
times."
"You cannot fool His Majesty's
Army," said the captain, impor-
tantly.
"I know. It is very smart, his
Majesty's Army! Smart enough
not to send decent soldiers here
but to send Mosley's scum!" Solo-
mon threw a murderous look at
the privates. One made a threat-
ening step closer. The captain
hastily stepped in front of him.
"If your son doesn't come out,
we will go in and get him."
"Poppa," exclaimed Becky from
inside. "Let them come and see
for themselves. "Momserem!" she
added in no soft voice.
Solomon reluctantly stepped
aside. Silently the soldiers looked
around the room. Becky then led
them into the kitchen, pointedly
opening the cupboards one by one,
even the smallest onees. Solomon
looked around in surprise. Where
was the supper? Then he realized
Becky had not opened the refri-
gerator. All the supper must have
been hastily placed in there.
The captain left the kitchen.
One of the privates opened a coo-
kie jar and stuffed a huge hand-
ful of cookies in his pocket be-
fore turning to follow the officer.
Becky grabbed up the jar and
thrust it info his hands. He
looked at her in astonishment.
"The Jews don't cat contami-
nated food," she said contemptu-
ously and hurried after the cap-
tain. She led him into one room
after another of the one-story
house. At last there was only one
room left. The soldiers turned to-
wards it. Becky stood in front of
the door.

"You cannot go in theere," she
said. "My daughters are in bed."
"So early?" asked the captain,
unbelieving. "Isn't this your New
Year's Eve?"

Becky sighed. "No day Is a holi-
day when the son of the house is
kept away. What can young girls
do now-a-days? Go out after dark
and be raped like Lisa Levin?"
The captain thought uneasily of
the most unfortunate occurrence
of a few days before.

"No," Becky continued, "my
daughters stay home safe in their

own beds. And," she added, "no
men go into their rooms."
"I'm sorry, madam, but we must
search that room. At once!" The
captain tried to move Becky
aside. She uttered a shrill, pierc-
ing scream. "Help!" she screamed
hysterically. "Help -T"
Solomon, not knowing what was
happening, but following his wife's
lead, ran to an open window and
closed it. But through the other
open windows came the sound of
running feet. A knock thundered
at the door.
The captain was red and sweat-
ing. He thought of the soldier
who had been so efficiently pun-
ished for his crime by the Levin
neighbors. "Guard that door," he
snapped. "Both of you." He turned
to Becky. "I will go in by my-
self. You don't have to be afraid
of me. I will not go near your
daughters."
Becky remained motionless. "I'll
just open the door and look in,"
he pleaded.
Becky looked at Solomon, then
slowly opened the door. The cap-
tain looked around the room. He
bent down and tried to see across
the room under the bed. There
was no one there.'Rowever there
was another door to the room.
He looked at Becky.
"That door—?"
"It is only a closet." Becky
started to close the bedroom door.
The captain, ill at ease, stopped
her.
"I must look in the closet."
Becky seemed about to scream.
"I will just go to the closet and
come out at once." Hurriedly he
stepped into the room.
Becky ran and stood in front
of the bed. The two girls who
had been silently staring began
to cry. One became hysterical.
Solomon ran Into the room. The
captain stood by the door.
"Now, now," he said distracted-
ly, keeping his eyes away from
the bed. "Now, now, girls. Don't
be afraid. Nothing will happen to
you. I'm only looking for your
brother."
At this the girls cried more
violently. Becky cried. Solomon
tore his hair. Keeping close to
the wall, thinking of the maimed
soldier, the captain reached the
door. He hurrieidly looked into
the closet. Only clothes. He turned
and scutted , out of the room, a
free man.
Hastily he left the house, the
two soldiers silently following.

They pushed through the little
group gathered outside. The cap-
tain threw a nasty glance at one
of the men. Old Solomon, follow-
ing, noticed the glance. Little
Manny's father! He would not in-
form again!
Some time later he re-entered
the house. He went into his
daughter's bedroom.
"They are gone," he said. "But
where is Benny?"
Laughing, the girls jumped out
of bed. "Are you sure they're
gone?" asked Sarah.
"Yes," said Solomon.
"Let me out of here!" called a
muffled voice.
The three women pulled off the
bedcovers. "Give me a hand, Pop-
pa," said Becky. Solomon helped
them roll back the mattress. On
the middle of the spring, was
Benny, lying with his face pressed
against the spring. Groaning, he
was helped to his feet. They
laughed at his face, criss-crossed
by the wires of the spring.
He kissed his mother. "What a
tigress!" He started to kiss his
sisters, then playfully smacked
Anna. "Next time stay on your
own side of the bed and don't roll
over on top of me," he said.
