condition—but the doctor re-

cards.
He explained to the bewildered
husband that RS long as she cried
in French "Mon Dieu!" and in
English "My God!" her time had
not come yet.
But suddenly she cried out in
plain Yiddish, "Ribono shel Olam!
Oh, weh!"—and the doctor rushed
to her assistance. "Now is the
time," he remarked. "Her pain is

JERICHO RECALLED
THE SHOFAR REMINDS US
of the biblical time when the first
city of the Promised Land was
to be taken by Israel under the
leadership of Joshua: "Now Jeri-
cho was shut up, because of the
children of Israel, none went out
and none came in. And the Lord
said . . . the priests shall blow
with the Shofarim and . . . at the
sound of the voice of the Shofar
the walls of the city shall fall
down, and the people shall ascend
up . . . " (Joshua 6)
Once again the walls must and
shall come tumbling down. The
gates of the Land of Israel must,
and with God's help.will, be open-
ed again to its children, the chil.
dren of Israel.

ing our Piutim. How elevating the
sweet melodies of the Rosh-Ha-
shonah services! Yet, no matter
how deeply moved we are by all
the liturgy and traditional cere-
monies, the most impressive mo-
ment of the day is felt when the
mysterious sounds of the Shofar
are echoed and reechoed through-
out the synagogue.
This primitive musical Instru-
ment with its crude form af-
fects our whole being, and its
sounds are underlined with reli-
gious whispers which penetrate
deep into the innermost of our
hearts.
We feel electrified by its bizarre
and mystic tones—and we wonder:
Whence this sublime influence
upon our souls?
The answer to this question can
be best illustrated by the follow-
ing story, related by the renowned
orator, the Rev. H. Masliansky.
*
REVERTS TO PRIMITIVE
THE FAMOUS DR. KAZANO-
WITZ of Bialistok was once called
to the confinement of a young
Jewish woman of an aristocratic
(assimilationist) family. Upon her
examination, the doctor saw that
it would still take hours before
she would be ready for delivery.
But the husband asked the doc-
tor not to leave the house and
invited him to a game of cards
in a nearby room.
The woman, knowing of the
doctor's and other cultured per-
son's presence, cried out loudly
as if in great pain—using select-

dm, too, no matter how poetic or
learned they are, do not fascinate
and captivate us as much as do
the primitive tones of the Shofar
and the genuine feelings they
symbolize.
The short, broken sound of
"Sheworim" signifies the short lit,
of the individual which is like th'
short sound of a horn. As it is 1
written (Psalm 144:4) "Man is
like a breath—his days like a pas.
sing shadow."
And the long, thrilling tones of
"Teruah" symbolize the long pert.
ods of suffering which the Jewish
people endured all through the
thousands of years during their
wanderings among the nations of
the world.
