TRUMAN SENDS EMISSARY
HERE IN THE UNITED
STATES, under the pressure of
public opinion stimulated by the
Zionist Emergency Council, Presi-
dent Truman, in the beginning of
1946, sent an emissary, Dean Har-
rison, to investigate the situation
in the concentration camps. Har.
rison's report contained a detailed
description of the horrible situa-
tion of the Jewish "displaced per.
sons" (a new synonym for home.
less people).
His recommendation was that
it was urgent that the Jews be
taken out of the camps as soon
as possible and that their entry
into Palestine be facilitated.
On the strength of that re-
port, President Truman ad-
dressed a letter to Prime Min.
asterAttlee asking that there be
granted immediately visas for
admission to Palestine to 100,-
000 Jews detained in camps.
A protracted correspondence en-
sued, the result of which was the
appointment of a joint commission
consisting of six Americans and
six British members who were to
investigate again the situation of
the Jews in camps, in Europe and
in Palestine.
The method of delay and pro.
crastination through the naming
of Royal Commissions is often
used by imperialistic Britain. Fif-
teen commissions were appointed
for Palestine during the last
quarter of a century since Great
Britain was entrusted by the
League of Nations with the Man-
date.

THE ZIONIST LEADERS in
America warned the U. S. Gov-
ernment against playing into the
hands of the British, who were
seeking to gain time in order to
create more opposition and con-
fusion among the Arabs of Pal-
estine and in the nearby countries.
The President did, however, ap-
point a committee of six members
to the commission. One of the ap-
pointees was James G. MacDonald
who had great experience with the
problem of refugees in the last
war when he was named commis-
sioner for refugees by the League
of Nations.
The joint commission departed
on a long, • tedious trip of investi-
gation. Before leaving London, the
commission was promised by Be-
yin that if they reached a unani-
mous decision its recommendations
would be carried out immediately.
In the course of two months the
commission held public hearings
in Washington and London, in
concentration camps, in Warsaw
and Vienna, in Jerusalem and
Cairo.

were deeply impressed with the
achievements of the Jews in Pal-
estine in spite of the obstacles
put in their path by the British
government.
As the result of an exhaustive
study, the commission rendered
a unanimous report one of its
first recommendations being that
the admission to Palestine of
100,000 Jews be facilitated forth-
with.
This report was rendered on the
30th of April, and President Tru-
man repeated his demand that the
recommendations be carried out
immediately. But Bevin issued a
statement full of resentment and
insult to the Jews of America
and to the U. S. A. in general.
The British government demand-
ed again consultation of the ex-
perts of both countries.

MEANWHILE, the military oc-
cupation forces in Palestine, upon
instructions from Jerusalem and
London, made a shameful attack
on the Yishuv, where 2,000 people
were dragged by force to deten.
tion camps. Also arrested were
four members of the Jewish
Agency, including the old, vener•
able Rabbi J. L. Fishman, who
was mistreated by the soldiers for
his refusal to desecrate the Sab.
bath.
The headquarters of the Jew-
ish Agency was occupied for
more than a week. There was
robbery and marauding in the
public buildings and private
homes. In the village of Yagur

sively for defense was uncovered
