LIFE OF ISAAC MAYER WISE,
STORY OF A TRUE AMERICAN
(The story of Isaac M. llrlse who came to this country 100 years ago
to build Liberal Judaism in the U. 8.)
By DR. MAURICE N. EISENDRATII
(Director, Union of American Hebrew Congregations)
One hundred years ago Isaac M. wise came to this country, a Bohemian
Immigrant rabbi. He had a vision, a Judaism firmly rooted In the tradi-
tions of both the Hebrew prophets and the founding fathers of the American
Republic. From this vision was born the Union of American lielhewCon•
regations and the Hebrew Union College, the twin fountainheads of Reform
Judalem In America. Today, the Union comprises 332 congregations through-
out the United States; the Hebrew Union College, which gave ono hundred
of its eons to the chaplaincy, has trained almost 500 men for the rabbinate.
—EDITOR'S NOTE
The glorious and thrilling epic
of America is filled with dramatic
and daring tales . of many a daunt-
less pioneer who coming from
the far ends of the earth and
searching for some friendly and
hospitable spot, came at last to
one or another frontier settlement
and established there his humble
home. Sometimes he dug his eager
hands immediately into the pre-
cious soil of this new and sponta.
neously cherished land, removing
with back-breaking toll, the stub.
born stones and the deep-rooted
trees, that he might, in such free-
dom as he knew not in the serf-
ridden lands he had forsaken
where he had planted vineyards
that another might eat their
fruitage, where he had built hous-
es that another might inhabit,
here, at last, however, on the free
soil of America, the lowly immi-
grant did indeed build houses and,
be they ever so humble, himself
inhabited them; planted his vine-
yards and himself ate the fruit
thereof. Others tunnelled down In.
to the bowels of the earth to
bring forth the nation's hidden
riches; built roads across its far-
sprawling prairies, flung bridges
over Its teeming rivers and
streams. Still others, starting mod:
estly as itinerant vendors of a
motley miscellany of merchandise,
by fair dealing and simple friend-
liness, saw their peddler's packs,
once carried humbly on their
backs, grow into the crossroads'
general store; then, into the proud
emporiums of the great cities,
Into instruments for education and
philanthropy, into the industries
and trades which have helped
make America the mighty nation
of today. Such is indeed tile epic
of America.
But those who thus came from
the ends of the earth did not
bring physical gifts alone. They
did not only contribute their
brawn to the building of America.
They brought much spiritual
bounty likewise. They bore with
them offerings of the heart which
have made America truly Amer
can:—a wondrous amalgam of all
the highest hopes and noblest
dreams of those who were drawn
to this new world to rear here a
nation "one and indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all."
Among the bearers of these la-
ter gifts of the mind and of the
heart was one who reached these
shores just exactly one hundred
years ago this year. It was in
those restless, tempestuous days
just prior to the European revo
lution of 1848, that this particular
Jewish teacher and rabbi, Isaac
Mayer Wise, by name, was seized
with an implacable longing to set
out for America. He had no sto.
mach for the pride and prejudice
of nineteenth centry Europe which
should have served as a warning;
which has indeed proved but a
prelude to all the hideous terror
that has followed in our own time.
This freedom-loving rabbi could

not abide the tyrannies, petty and
great, which went into the prepa-
ration of that witch's brew which,
in our day, has spilled over the
entire earth and which, by the
sacrifice of millions of our moth-
er's sons, we prevented, by the
skin of our teeth, from inundating
the whole of our twentieth cen-

hemia, toward the middle of the
last century, this man Wise saw
the handwriting on the wail of
bigoted Europe and yearned for
what he was sensitive enough to
realize was something altogether
new under the sun taking shape
in America. Even in Bohemia he
stood valiantly, as a Gibraltar

in opposition to those who sought
to rob them of their God.given
