"So we tions. Dr. Waksman came to America from Priluka, a small town near Kiev in Russia, in 1910. His fam- ily looked upon America as the typical land of opportunity, and did not see much of that In Czar- ist Russia. From the very first he tried to isolate a microbe which would be the most effective against other types of microbes, such as those which 'cause typhoid and tuberculosis. When we found this microbe, we built it up and fat- tened it under ideal conditions. Then we robbed it of its fighting Charles Rosenbloom, chairman of the United Palestine Ap- peal and of the United Jewirli Appeal, speaking at the recent foundation ceremonies of Irgtin Basra, newest Palestinian settle- ment for, veterans of the Jewish Brigade, said his fellow Jews in America "would be greatly encouraged and highly inspired by the news of the construction work going on in this country." At the same time Palestinian Jewish leaders paid high tribute to American Jewry, pointing out that it was their generous contributions to the United Jewish Appeal's $100,000,000 cam- paign which gave new impetus to the intensive program of upbuilding the Jewish National Home. Mr. Rosenbloom has been touring Palestine along with other leaders of the U.J.A. and U.P.A. observing the development program financed by both agencies. In 1944, the drug first appeared, but Its use was confined to Army patients. Three lives were saved the first week it was applied. The only trouble was that the drug could not be produced in suffi- ciently large quantities to take care of all emergencies. It must be grown slowly under laboratory conditions and, in addition, is more expensive to produce than penicillin. Hundreds of frantic calls came in from civilians, begging for streptomycin for critical cases. Now these appeals will be an- swered quickly, for 15 companies in the country are making it and some are building special plants. In a few months a large commer- cial supply of the drug will be on the market. While the accomplishments of men like Dr. Chain and Dr. Waks- man are already inscribed in the hall of fame and that of Dr. Lowew still awaits the critical test of time, there are many great Jewish scientists who have been patiently exploring some of the other mysteries of the world of microbes and bacteria. Space, of course, does not permit describing their achievements or hopes, but one man in the Midwest is worthy of mention. He is Dr. Harry Goldblatt of Western Reserve University in Ohio, the- foremost experimenter with anti-reticular cytoxic serum (commonly called ACS) In Ameri- ca. ACS is the discovery of a Russian who was half-Jewish, Dr. A. A. Bogomolets, who died seve- ral weeks ago. It is a fascinating drug in that—if startling predic- tions come true — it can prolong The Season's heartiest Greetings to my many Friends— 8600 - 12TH ST. 302 W. 7 Mile Rd. life to 125 or 150 years. However, neither Dr. Bogomolcts nor Dr. Goldblatt ever made such claims for it. What is certain, however, is that the connective tissue of the hu- man body deteriorates and when it does, what we know as old age sets in. Dr. Bogomolets discov- ered a serum—ACS--which when injected gives new life to indivi- duals. He discovered it in a small town in Southern Russia where an amazing number of men and women were over 100 years of age. Their tissue was young and he de- duced that this was the difference between them and prematurely aged people. In 1936, after 12 years of pre- liminary experiments with ani- mals, Dr. Bogomolets used ACS on humans and found it a miracle drug in treating infected wounds, ostemyelitis, arthritis, gangrene, lung abscesses, bone fractures and cancer after operation, the latter to prevent re-occurrence. Now Dr. Goldblatt is carrying on this work, with a large grant made by American benefactors. At present he is compiling an. swers to questionnaires which in- dicate how the first 3,000 patients treated with it have fared. Much will be heard from Dr. Goldblatt and much will be heard of ACS.
